Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Two goals in the final six minutes allowed the Waterloo Black Hawks to escape from L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon with a 5-4 road win against the Lumberjacks on Friday.
The Lumberjack's only lead of the night lasted nearly eight minutes until 14:20 of the third period. The Hawks controlled a draw back to the point, and Michael Ferrandino's shot was redirected by Garrett Klee over Keegan Karki's shoulder to tie it. Klee then set up the game-winner with the Hawks on a power play and 2:15 to go. His pass across the top of the crease connected with Matej Blumel, who redirected it up under the crossbar.
On the opening shift of the night, a give-and-go led to one extra pass and the Hawks' first lead. Solag Bakich didn't connect with Jackson Cates, but Bakich scored himself when the puck came back to him and he cut across the slot to slip in a backhander. The Waterloo edge lasted about eight-and-a-half minutes before Bray Crowder fired in a shot from the left point.
The third shorthanded goal in as many games put Waterloo back in front at 10:50 of the first. Jack Drury set up Ben Copeland on a two-one-one; Copeland's shot crossed the goal line after deflecting off Karki's glove.
Waterloo went ahead 3-1 at 9:26 when Jackson Cates capitalized on the rebound of Mason Palmer's shot from the left point.
Undaunted, the Lumberjacks rallied to tie it within four minutes. The comeback started with a power play goal at 10:37, when Marc Del Gaizo's shot deflected in off of Monte Graham at the front of the net. Another chance from close range led to the equalizer at 13:02; Egor Afanasyev got the last touch during a scramble just outside the crease.
The third consecutive Muskegon goal put the Lumberjacks in front at 6:28 of the third period. A turnover in the Waterloo zone allowed Emilio Pettersen to set up Wyatt Bongiovanni for a score from close range.
Waterloo put 20 shots on net in the third period at finished with 41 to Muskegon's 36. Moe made 32 saves for the win.
