Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Kickers recorded a 4-0 victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup 2nd round versus Aromas Café FC on Wednesday May 18 at City Stadium. Richmond scored two goals in each half, through Sunny Jane and Hugh Roberts in the first and Anthony Grant and Luiz Fernando in the second. With the victory, Kickers will take on the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, of the NASL, in the third round at Ft. Lauderdale on June 1.

Kickers started the game with an early goal, setting the pace for the game. In the second minute of the game Richmond won a free kick just outside the box. From 25-yards out, forward, Sunny Jane, curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom left hand corner of Aromas' goal, giving Kickers a 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, Kickers doubled their lead from another set piece. A quick free kick from Kickers forward, Sascha Goerres, found an unmarked William Yomby in the six-yard box whose header was saved by Aromas keeper, Charlie Horton, but fellow center back, Hugh Roberts, was there to put in the rebound following the save, putting Kickers up 2-0.

Richmond dominated possession and searched for a third goal and almost found it through Roumlu Peretta when he broke down the left wing and fired a low shot that forced Horton to make good save.

The second half started with the Kickers again scoring early in the half, this time through forward, Anthony Grant, who recorded his first goal for the Kickers this season as he gave the Kickers a 3-0 lead in the 48th minute. Travis Pittman played the ball to Anthony Grant on the right wing who ran at the Aromas defense before firing a blistering strike from just outside the box that hit the underside of the crossbar and then into the net.

Aromas Café FC were quick to respond with their best chance of the game. Aromas forward, Jake Van Yahres, found himself with space just inside the box and fired a low shot that was saved by Richmond goalkeeper, Charlie Horton, on loan from DC United, who parried the ball behind for an Aromas' corner.

Horton was called into action once again in the 56th minute, a deflected cross from Aromas looked like it was looping over Horton's head and into the goal, but he was able to dive well and push the ball away from goal before the shot following the save went wide of Horton's goal.

Substitute, Luiz Fernando, scored the fourth goal and his first goal for the club in 83rd minute. Romulu Peretta crossed the ball into the box that was headed clear only as far as Luiz Fernando, who from just inside the box slotted the ball with his left foot past the goalie and into the back of the net, giving the Kickers a 4-0 lead over Aromas Café FC.

Richmond goalkeeper, Charlie Horton, recorded a clean sheet and one save on his debut, that also marks the Kickers third consecutive home clean sheet.

The Richmond Kickers will be back at City Stadium on Saturday, May 21 to host Food Truck Fest and USL Eastern Conference leaders, Louisville City FC. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
