August 10, 2017 - Carolina League (CarL) - Frederick Keys
FREDERICK, MD-The Frederick Keys (52-60/21-22) survived a ninth inning scare to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash (46-68) 8-7 on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. Tanner Chleborad stranded a man at third base to record the final two outs on the way to his 16th save.
With the Keys leading 8-6, Mitch Horacek was called upon in the ninth inning. Luis Basabe reached base to lead off the inning on an error from Jomar Reyes. Horacek then induced a ground ball off the bat of Bryant Flete, but Brallan Perez booted the ball and threw it away, allowing Flete to reach and Basabe to move up to third with no outs. A wild pitch allowed Basabe to score, making it 8-7. Flete moved up to third on the play, and then Horacek struck out Zack Collins.
Chleborad came in to record the final two outs. With the infield playing in, the Keys right-hander got Eloy Jimenez to ground out to short. He then walked Brandon Dulin to bring up Seby Zavala. Zavala hit a fly ball to left field that ended the game and secured the win for the Keys.
It was a back and forth game all night, as the Dash scored twice in the first inning thanks to a Dulin two-run homer. They added a single marker in the third on a Jimenez big fly, making it 3-0.
Frederick responded in the bottom of the third with two runs. With one out, Perez and Jay Gonzalez each walked. Ademar Rifaela brought in Perez with a single, and Gonzalez scored on a Glynn Davis sacrifice fly, reducing the Dash lead to 3-2.
The Keys took their first lead of the game in the fourth. Following a leadoff walk to Reyes, Shane Hoelscher launched a two-run blast over the right field fence. Winston-Salem would quickly counter in the fifth, however, when the first six men reached. Collins and Jimenez each singled, and Dulin walked to load the bases for Zavala. He then hit a two-run single up the middle followed by an RBI single from Jameson Fisher, making it 6-4 Dash.
The orange and black scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Yermin Mercedes drove in Rifaela with a single in the fifth, and Chris Clare scored on a Gonzalez single in the sixth, tying the game at six.
Mercedes launched a go-ahead two-run home run to left field in the seventh to score the final two Keys runs, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Mike Burke (3-0) picked up the win for the Keys, throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball while not allowing a hit and striking out four. Louie Lechich (2-4) took the loss, allowing a run on one hit in 0.1 innings.
The Keys and Dash continue their series on Wednesday night. Left-hander Reid Love (2-4, 4.08) takes the mound for the Keys and will be opposed by right-hander A.J. Puckett (9-7, 3.90) for the Dash.
