San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Kevin Roy scored the first-ever overtime goal for the San Diego Gulls (4-2) 38 seconds into the extra session to seal a 3-2 win over the San Jose Barracuda (3-3) tonight at SAP Center. Roy's goal gave San Diego a 1-0 series lead in the Pacific Division Finals in the third overtime game the Gulls have participated in in club history.
The Gulls overcame two one-goal deficits, the second with 3:56 remaining in regulations when Nate Guenin tied the game at 2-2 to push the contest to San Diego's first overtime session and Jhonas Enroth (4-2) stopped 36-of-38 shots for his fourth victory of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Enroth has stopped 192-of-203 shots this postseason, earning a 1.84 goals-against average (GAA) and .946 save percentage (SV%).
San Jose scored the first goal of the series at 9:35 of the opening period when Joakim Ryan's power-play goal from the top of the circles beat Gulls goaltender Jhonas Enroth low to his glove side. Ryan's third of the season
The Gulls earned a power play of their own when San Jose's Tim Heed was sent to the penalty box for tripping, and 37 seconds into the man advantage Ryan Carpetener was penalized for hooking to put San Diego on a two-man advantage for a full 1:23.
The Gulls tied the game at 1-1 at 16:49 with a power-play goal of their own when rookie center Kalle Kossila accepted a Kevin Roy feed at the top of the circles and beat San Jose netminder Troy Grosenick high over the shoulder blocker side for his second goal of the postseason.
After the first period, San Jose had a dominant 14-2 shot advantage but the Gulls skated off for the first intermission knotted at one thanks to Enroth making numerous point-blank saves on second-chance opportunities.
The second period saw momentum swing between both clubs but neither could find an answer to break the 1-1 deadlock. San Jose outshot the Gulls 12-8 in the period, but the Gulls went into the second intermission having pushed the play towards the end of the period.
Barracuda forward Ryan Carpenter scored at 12:08 of the third period, beating Enroth with a snap shot after Gulls defenseman Keaton Thompson denied a centering pass. The puck stopped in Carpenter's path and he didn't miss, slotting it home just over the Swedish netminder's pad and below his blocker to give the Barracuda a 2-1 lead with under eight minutes remaining.
At 16:04 of the final period Kalle Kossila won a faceoff back to defenseman Nate Guenin whose point shot found its way through traffic to beat Grosenick and knot the game again with his first goal of the playoffs. The Gulls overcame their second deficit of the game and forced their first overtime session of the 2017 postseason.
Only 38 seconds into the extra frame, Tyler Morley found a streaking Kevin Roy who came in on Grosenick and snapped a quick shot past the glove of the Barracuda goaltender to seal the victory and a 1-0 series lead.
The Gulls and Barracuda will face off tomorrow night for Game 2 at SAP Center (7 p.m.) in the third back-to-back set for San Diego this postseason.
