Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

GENEVA, ILL. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored five unanswered runs Saturday to pull away for a 6-1 win at the Kane County Cougars. Saturday's victory, which came in front of 10,329 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, was Cedar Rapids' seventh consecutive win over Kane County in this year's season series.

Cedar Rapids (28-20, 64-53) broke up an early scoreless deadlock in the top of the third inning. Christian Cavaness was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a Brandon Lopez single. Sean Miller batted next and hit an RBI single that brought in Cavaness for a 1-0 Kernels lead.

Kane County (20-28, 53-65) tied the contest at 1-1 in the sixth due to an error. Marcus Wilson drew a leadoff walk and stayed at first base after a lineout by Trevor Mitsui. A wild pitch helped Wilson get into scoring position, and then an error on a ground ball from Ramon Hernandez allowed Wilson to score the game-tying run.

During the seventh inning, Cedar Rapids secured a 4-1 lead. Cavaness tallied the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Miller. Lopez added another run by scoring after a wild pitch. Zander Wiel reached on a two-out error and was driven in by Luis Arraez's RBI single.

A pair of runs in the top of the ninth lifted the Kernels to a 6-1 advantage. Arraez posted another RBI single, bringing Cavaness home from third base. With runners at the corners and two outs, Arraez got into a rundown between first and second that helped Wiel score the final run of the contest.

Lachlan Wells (4-3) recorded the win, allowing only one unearned run over six innings. The bullpen came through over the final three frames to protect the lead. Max Cordy picked up a hold after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a strikeout. Tom Hackimer followed with two scoreless innings and was credited with his third save. Max Duval (1-4) took the loss Saturday, giving up two runs - one earned - over 6.1 innings pitched.

The finale between Cedar Rapids and Kane County is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Kernels right-hander Tyler Beardsley (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will face Cougars right-hander Jose Almonte (1-3, 3.23 ERA).
