Timber Rattlers Top Kernels to Even Series Cedar Rapids' four-game win streak snapped by Wisconsin
GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers right-hander Trey Supak outdueled Cedar Rapids Kernels right-hander Clark Beeker early before Wisconsin pulled away for a 9-2 victory Friday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Wisconsin's victory tied this series at one win apiece and also ended Cedar Rapids' season-high four-game win streak.
The Timber Rattlers (19-19) took a 1-0 lead during the second inning. Jose Cuas singled and moved to third base after a single from Trever Morrison before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Rodriguez.
Supak (2-2) retired the first six batters he faced before allowing a run to Cedar Rapids (24-17) in the third. A force out coupled with an error allowed Ben Rortvedt to get into scoring position. Aaron Whitefield's sacrifice bunt set up Christian Cavaness for a game-tying single that evened the contest at 1-1. That unearned run was the only tally conceded by Supak in a six-inning quality start.
Beeker's only issues through the end of his quality start were solo home runs. Morrison hit a go-ahead shot in the fourth, and Rodriguez recorded a solo homer during the seventh for a 3-1 Timber Rattlers lead. Beeker (5-2) took the loss after giving up three runs over seven innings, and the defeat snapped his five-game win streak. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters that he faced while allowing those two round-trippers in that stretch.
Wisconsin plated six runs in the eighth while stretching its lead to 9-1. Demi Oromoloye came home on a wild pitch to open the rally. Later, Morrison was hit by a pitch to force in another run. Rodriguez followed with a single coupled with an error that cleared the bases, and an RBI single off the bat of Ronnie Gideon brought in Rodriguez.
Jermaine Palacios slugged a solo homer in the ninth inning - his fifth blast of the season - but that only trimmed the difference to 9-2. Parker Berberet yielded just that one run over three frames to secure his second save this year.
This four-game series continues at 6:35 p.m. Saturday. The probable starters for Saturday's contest are Kernels right-hander Eduardo Del Rosario (2-2, 5.29) and Timber Rattlers right-hander David Burkhalter (0-0, 5.06).
