Kernels Lose Series Finale In Peoria

Peoria, IL - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Peoria Chiefs combined for five home runs with the wind blowing out as the Chiefs downed the Kernels 9-6 at O'Brien Field in Peoria on Sunday afternoon. Peoria hit three of the five home runs. The Chiefs scored four runs in the 3rd inning and five runs in the 5th inning.

Kernels starter Heath Nichols (0-1) took the loss on the mound. He went 4.2 innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on ten hits. He struck out one and walked one. Jeff Antigua (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three this. He struck out two and walked two. Chiefs starter Cameron Greathouse went 4.1 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits.

The Kernels led the game early. They took a 3-0 lead on a Ryan Jones RBI single that scored Wes Hatton. Peoria answered back in the bottom of the 3rd when they scored four runs. With two outs, four straight Chiefs reached base. Greg Rohan hit a 3-run home run against Kernels starter Nichols. On the very next pitch, Richard Jones homered to give Peoria a 4-3 lead.

Kernels centerfielder Travis Witherspoon tied the game at 4-4 in the 5th inning with a solo home run to left field off of Greathouse. Peoria exploded for five runs in the bottom of the 5th. to give the Chiefs a 9-4 lead. Rubi Silva homered off of Nichols to give the Anthony Giansanti and Sergio Burruel also had RBI hits. The Kernels cut into the lead in the 7th when Jean Almanzar hit a two run home run, making the score 9-6.

Erik Gregersen pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings in relief for the Kernels. He allowed one hit, struck out one, and walked one. Seth Fowler gave up no runs and no hits in one inning of relief for the Kernels. Eduardo Figueroa picked up the save in two innings of relief for the Chiefs. He allowed no runs and one hit. The Kernels and Chiefs split the four game series to begin the season in Peoria.

The Kernels open the 2011 season at Perfect Game Field on Monday at 6:35 pm against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The first 1,000 fans through the gates get a free 10th Anniversary Veterans Memorial Stadium t-shirt, thanks to the Best Western Longbranch. 2011 magnet schedules, courtesy Mercy Care Community Physicians, will be passed out to all fans during Opening Week, April 11-14.
