Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels used four home runs in the first two innings to get out to an early lead and eventually beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-4 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels scored seven times in the bottom of the second inning and sent the Rattlers to their sixth straight loss. Kernel starting pitcher Chris Hunter gave up eleven hits in seven innings, but only allowed four runs -- two earned for his fifth win.

Wisconsin (36-48 overall, 5-10 second half) got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Mike Nesbit reached second base to start the game when a pop up was dropped for an error. Nick Orlandos grounded out to move Nesbit to third. Adam Jones followed with an RBI ground out.

Brandon Wood put the Kernels (49-35, 7-8) in front with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.

An run scoring fielder's choice by Wladimir Balentien tied the game 2-2.

Then, the Kernels batted in the second. Matt Pali and Matt Brown started the inning with back-to-back home runs off Jason Mackintosh. A walk and an error put runners at first and third. Quan Cosby singled home the third run of the inning. Mackintosh got two outs, but gave up an RBI single to Blake Balkcom. Rattler reliever Kenly Chang came on and gave up a three run homer to Michael Collins to finish the scoring in the inning.

Wisconsin chipped away with another run scoring fielder's choice in the top of the third, this one off the bat of Jones. The Rattlers added an unearned run in the fourth when Josh Womack's two-out grounder to second was booted for an error to allow Chris Collins to score from second. But, that was it for the scoring.

Game three of the four game series is set for Saturday night. Nibaldo Acosta (4-9, 4.46ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Nic Touchstone (4-3, 3.48ERA) is slated to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:00pm.
