Kernels fall 4-1 at Peoria on a frigid Friday

PEORIA, Ill. -Peoria topped the Kernels 4-1 on Friday afternoon at a frigid Peoria Chiefs Stadium. Temperatures were in the 30s during the game, winds were gusting as much as 25 mph, and snow flurries even fell from the sky.
Byron Buxton gave the Kernels a 1-0 in the 3rd inning with a RBI triple to right-center that scored Jairo Rodriguez. That was 1 of only 4 hits the Kernels collected off of Chiefs starter Kurt Heyer. Heyer (1-0) went 7 innings and struck out 8 while walking 0 for the win.
The Kernels 1-0 lead was short-lived as Peoria scored twice in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take a 2-1 lead. Alex Mejia's RBI single scored Ildemaro Vargas, and Mejia scored on a RBI double by Jordan Walton.
The Chiefs took a 4-1 lead in the 5th inning when Jordan Walton's RBI single plated Alex Mejia, and Breyvic Valera scored from 3rd base on Jacob Wilson's RBI sacrifice fly.
Hudson Boyd (1-1) took the loss for the Kernels, going 4.1 innings. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. Tim Atherton pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. David Hurlbut tossed 2 scoreless innings.
Zach Petrick notched his 2nd save for Peoria, going the final 2 innings.
The Kernels look to avoid the sweep with a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon.
