Kernels collect 4 hits in 2-1 defeat to Beloit

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After scoring a combined 12 runs over their first two games, the Kernels (2-1) mustered just four hits in a 2-1 loss to the Beloit Snappers (1-2) on Saturday afternoon. The Snappers led the entire game in handing the Kernels their first loss of the season.

With the score 2-0, Jorge Polanco doubled home a run for the Kernels to narrow the deficit to 2-1 in the 8th inning.

Earlier in the contest, the Kernels had runners on second and third in the 2nd inning but were unable to plate a run.

Beloit outhit the Kernels, 10-4. Left fielder Ryan Matthews went 3-for-3 for the Snappers, including a home run to lead off the 5th inning. Matthews drove home the other Snappers run with a RBI double in the 3rd inning.

For the Kernels, Byron Buxton went 1-for-3 with a walk. The center fielder is hitting .455 through the first three games.

Pitcher Seth Streich (1-0) was solid all day for the Snappers, yielding 2 hits and striking out 4 over 5 innings.

Mason Melotakis (0-1) gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings for the Kernels. This was the southpaw's first professional start after appearing in 20 games out of the bullpen for low-A Elizabethton and Beloit in 2012.

Relievers Matthew Tomshaw and Manuel Soliman prevented any further damage, combining to go 4.2 innings, giving up no runs and striking out 4.
