Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Playing before a crowd of 3,897 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied for a 7-3 win Saturday against the Burlington Bees. Cedar Rapids guaranteed its fourth consecutive season series victory over Burlington, improving to 9-6 heading into Sunday's series finale.

Burlington (28-27, 60-65) notched an early lead in the second inning. Two runners were in scoring position for Connor Justus, who hit a two-out RBI single to shortstop that drove in Troy Montgomery for a 1-0 edge. Jared Walsh tried to score from second base on the ground ball up the middle but was put out 6-3-2-5 in a rundown between third base and home plate.

During the third inning, the Bees extended their lead to 2-0. Jahmai Jones recorded a one-out single and advanced to second on a Brennon Lund groundout. Matt Thaiss followed by producing a run-scoring double to bring in Jones.

The Kernels (32-23, 68-56) scored within the bottom of the fifth, slicing their deficit to 2-1. Travis Blankenhorn was at second base with two outs in the inning when J.J. Fernandez singled, which allowed Blankenhorn to tally Cedar Rapids' first run.

In the home half of the seventh, Cedar Rapids stormed in front by a 4-2 margin. Two hit batters and a one-out walk loaded the bases for Casey Scoggins. He registered a game-tying bloop single and brought Jaylin Davis home. Brandon Lopez batted next and drew a go-ahead walk that forced in Fernandez. Two batters later, Zander Wiel recorded a bases-loaded walk to push in Kevin Garcia.

The Bees fell one run short of tying the game in the top of the eighth. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Jordan Serena allowed Michael Barash to score, trimming the difference to 4-3. The bases were filled again by a hit batter, but Jordan Zimmerman struck out to end the inning.

Three runs during the bottom of the eighth stretched Cedar Rapids' lead to 7-3. Fernandez hit an RBI double off third base to plate Davis, and Scoggins recorded a single that brought in Blankenhorn. Lopez also added an RBI groundout.

Michael Cederoth (3-0), who was tagged for just one run in 2.2 innings pitched, took credit for the win while Jhonny Polanco (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing Cedar Rapids' seventh-inning rally. Cedar Rapids' Max Cordy and Burlington's Connor Lillis-White both picked up holds in relief.
