Kelowna Rockets News Release
Kelowna Rockets fans donated more than $25,000 worth of food to the Kelowna Food Bank at the first of two practices held by the NHL's Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday in Kelowna.
A capacity crowd of 6,000 fans were in attendance at Prospera Place in Kelowna to watch the Red Wings hold a fast-paced 45 minute practice as part of a three day stay in Kelowna by the NHL team.
Admission was by donation to the Kelowna Community Food Bank and Rockets fans came through with a massive donation, dropping off 11,200 pounds (5 1/2 tons) of food valued at over $25,000. There was also a further $1,500 in cash donations accepted by the food bank.
"It was an amazing turnout by our fans," said Gavin Hamilton, Kelowna Rockets vice president of business development. "They were lined up early this morning to get into the building."
The Red Wings are in Kelowna due to a three day break in its schedule, between games in Calgary on Monday and in Edmonton on Friday.
The Wings will skate again on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Prospera Place. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and once again fans are asked to bring a donation for the Kelowna Food Bank to get into the building.
