Kastles Clinch Thursday Home Playoff Match

July 26, 2015 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release

When the Kastles last played a home match on July 21, they were 4-3 and tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Boston Lobsters.

Fast forward five days and Washington is the hottest team in Mylan World TeamTennis, winning 14 of its last 15 sets and securing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

With four regular season matches remaining, Kastles coach Murphy Jensen hopes his men and women can keep their momentum going into Thursday's Eastern Conference Championship match.

Enjoy a sneak peak at the Kastles' playoff roster tonight when Washington hosts the Springfield Lasers in a rematch of the 2009, 2013 and 2014 Mylan WTT Finals. Tickets are nearly sold out; get yours starting at $12 on Ticketmaster.com or at the Smith Center box office.

Martina Hingis, Sam Querrey, Leander Paes and Anastasia Rodionova are all among the Top 35 singles or doubles players in the world, giving Jensen an embarrassment of riches to play with.

The Lasers, who feature three players ranked between 36 and 54 in the world rankings, have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

If you like what you see this evening, be sure to come back and see the same four Kastles competing for Washington's sixth Mylan WTT Championship in seven years. Tickets to playoff matches on Thursday, July 30 and Sunday, August 2 start at $10 per match and $15 for both matches. SET-BY-SET PROJECTIONS

MS - S. Querrey (WAS) vs. M. Russell (SPR)

Michael Russell was influential in the Lasers' run to the 2014 Mylan WTT Finals, finishing the season as the top-rated men's singles player in the league. Things aren't going as well for the 37-year-old American this summer; he's rated last among men's singles players. On the other side stands the red-hot Querrey, who is the WTT No. 1 and has swept all four of his singles sets since debuting for the Kastles on July 20.

WS - M. Hingis (WAS) vs. A. Riske (SPR)

Hingis played singles in her season debut July 23 in Boston, then stuck to women's and mixed doubles the following night in Austin. Should she suit up in singles tonight, the Swiss will be challenged by 54th-ranked Alison Riske. The 25-year-old American has posted mixed results in three WTT appearances, winning only one singles set so far this season. Going head-to-head with Hingis wouldn't make matters any easier for Riske.

MD - L. Paes/S. Querrey (WAS) vs. A. Begemann/M. Russell (SPR)

With Querrey's laser-like serves and Paes' rapid reflexes, the Kastles' men's doubles team has won three consecutive sets. Russell and Andre Begemann and have won three straight as well and improved immensely since the season began July 12. The telling game for the Kastles will come on Paes' serve, creating a 6-foot-6 target at the net named Querrey. The big man has stood his ground well so far this season.

WD - M. Hingis/A. Rodionova (WAS) vs. A. Groenefeld/A. Riske (SPR)

After hitting her stride with Madison Brengle, Rodionova has continued rolling in women's doubles with Hingis. That should come as no surprise. With wins on July 24 and 24, Rodionova and Hingis are 14-1 in their last 15 sets dating back to the 2013 season. That's a tough stat to crack if you're Riske and Anna-Lena Groenefeld. The Lasers' duo is 0-3 as a team this season, losing to Austin, Philadelphia and San Diego.

MXD - L. Paes/M. Hingis (WAS) vs. A. Begemann/A. Groenefeld (SPR)

Kastles fans have known for years that Hingis and Paes had what it took to win Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Now Washington's dream team returns to the scene if its birth: Kastles Stadium. Hingis and Paes are 19-2 overall for the Kastles, clinching both the 2013 and 2014 Mylan WTT Finals against the Lasers. Groenefeld and Begemann are rated last among WTT mixed doubles teams this season.

Also representing Washington are World No. 34 singles player Sam Querrey and World No. 23 doubles player Anastasia Rodionova.

The 2015 season has already seen the Kastles welcome their largest crowd ever (4,255 fans on July 21) and allow the fewest games in franchise history (Kastles def. Freedoms 23-6 on July 18). With Washington's four core players intact, the final week of the season is sure to bring more extraordinary tennis and Kastles franchise milestones.

So don't miss history in the making as Washington tries to defend the King Trophy and extend its 10-0 playoff record.
