Kalamazoo fails to capitalize on early opportunities in loss

November 10, 2012 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Johnstown, PA - Kalamazoo dearly missed their leading scorer, Luc Boby, as they fell to the Johnstown Tomahawks by a score of 4-1. Kalamazoo was unable to score any of their first four power plays, which proved to be too much to overcome.

The first and only goal of a first period dominated by penalties came with both sides at full strength. Jake Fairchild put home his first goal of the season for the Tomahawks at the 11:09 mark.

Most of the second period was dominated by Kalamazoo. They outshot Johnstown 10-5, but that all changed at 19:09 when Andrew McDonald (3rd) fired a shot right past Kalamazoo goalie Alex Okicki. This goal gave Johnstown a 2-0 lead after forty minutes of hockey.

It didn't take long for the Tomahawks to extend their lead. Just forty nine seconds into the third period, Mitch Kontny (9th) scored on the power play and gave the Tomahawks a 3-0 lead.

Chris Truehl lost the Johnstown shutout with 10:11 remaining in the third period. Danny Hamburg (7th) drove home the perfect pass from Robbie Payne. This was Payne's 22nd point of the year, which ties him with Boby for the team lead.

The Tomahawks were able to ice the game at the 17:28 mark when Zach Wallace (2nd) was able to take advantage of a power play and give his team the 4-1 advantage. This would end up being the final goal of the game and completed the weekend sweep of the Jr. K-Wings by the Tomahawks.

The final horn marks the end of a disappointing night for the Jr. K-Wings. Although they outshot the Tomahawks 22-21, they were unable to take advantage of scoring chances.
