K-Tribe throw another shutout
August 30, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release
The K-Tribe pitching staff tossed their Carolina League leading ninth shutout of the season, blanking Winston-Salem 5-0 Thursday night. K-Tribe starter Josh Tomlin (1-1) picked up his first Carolina League win with 6 2/3 shutout innings. Tomlin gave up just three hits, all to Warthog third baseman Javier Castillo, while striking out six batters and walking just one. It was Tomlin's 11th win in A ball this season, after going 10-3 for Low A Lake County before coming to Kinston. K-Tribe relievers Chris Niesel and Matt Meyer finished up the shutout for the Indians. All four Warthog hits were off the bat of Javier Castillo, no other Winston-Salem player managed a hit on the night.
Kinston came out firing in the first inning when Carolina League All Star Josh Rodriguez hit a one-out double. Matt Whitney followed with a single and Chris Gimenez walked to load the bases. Fellow CL All Star Wes Hodges singled home Rodriguez to put Kinston up 1-0. Jared Goedert added a run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Whitney. Hodges kept the good times going with a solo home run in the third and an RBI double in the seventh. Hodges went 3-for-5 with three RBI and one triple away from the cycle. Rodriguez lived up to his All Star billing as well, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Johnny Drennen added a solo home run, his 12th of the year, in the top of the sixth.
Kinston stays in Winston-Salem for the fourth and final game of the series on Friday night, before heading to Myrtle Beach for the final three games of the regular season. Jim Deters (11-4, 2.11) will take the hill for Kinston on Friday in Winston-Salem, game time 7pm.
