December 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

HERNANDO, Miss.—The Jr. StreetKings’ 10 and under division championship game was short and sweet Tuesday night, at least for undefeated Olive Branch Curb and Gutter team.

Olive Branch was hard pressed by wild card second place AvellinoÂ’s team. In the first period, Olive Branch came hard with two goals, one by Holden Byrd assisted by Nick Stransky at 9:45 and then again by Byrd at 6:56. AvellinoÂ’s answered with two goals of their own, with Josh Martin scoring at 4:22 and Noah Costa with 1 minute, 36 seconds left in the first half.

Olive Branch was not to be denied the crown, however. In the second period, the team fought back with a vengeance. Byrd scored another goal at 9:30 for a hat trick, and Kyle Morgan followed with a goal at 6:34. That wasnÂ’t enough for Byrd, apparently, who managed to squeeze in another goal at 1:35 to the whistle, assisted by Taylor Wilburn.

Olive Branch goalie Scotty Duncan stopped nine of 11 shots on goal by AvellinoÂ’s. AvellinoÂ’s goalie Taylor Griggs also held out for nine shots stopped, but Olive BranchÂ’s hard offense and 14 shots on goal prevailed.

“The guys did a great job,” Olive Branch coach Clyde Wiggins said. “There was a lot of teamwork. There was a lot of extra work too. I guess at 11-0, it paid off. They’re good kids. But all kids are good. Kids are a joy to work with.”

AvellinoÂ’s team suffered a season of defeat but dug deep for some winning spirit to make it into the playoffs.

“I was really proud of my kids,” Avellino’s coach Keith Gish said. “I was glad that we got here, considering we lost all but one game during the regular season but won in the playoffs to get the championship. They’ve really stuck it out.”

Other Olive Branch Curb and Gutter team members include Matt Roach, Drew Liberto, Trey Hopkins, Joey Little, and Evan Walls. AvellinoÂ’s team members include Josh Dorherty, Taylor Hartford, Hugh Taylor, Blaine Sisco, Brandon Langley, Hunter Moore and Nathan Tubbs.
