Joliet Slammers Game Notes

Joliet Slammers News Release

Last Time Out...

Through seven innings, the Joliet Slammers had only one hit Friday night. In the eighth inning, one swing of the bat changed everything. John Wagle hit a two-out, three run home run to give Joliet (25-20) the lead for good in a 5-3 victory over the Normal CornBelters (25-21). Joliet fell down 2-0 when Frank Martinez hit a two run home run in the first inning. The Slammers cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third as Kyle Maunus reached on a three base error. Brad Netzel hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive him in. Normal got an insurance run against Ryne Miller in the sixth, but it could have been worse. With the bases loaded and one out, a line drive to left was misjudged by David Fox. He was able to recover though and make a leaping catch, so only one run scored. The Slammers finally struck in the eighth as Maunus drew a walk, Netzel singled, and Wagle unleashed his first home run of the season. For Starters...

Jake Renshaw's last start came against Normal and he took the loss, going six innings, giving up seven hits, six runs (four earned), walking two and striking out five. He is tied with Jeremy Tietze for the team lead in wins. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The 25-year old right hander put up excellent numbers last year in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.

First place!

With the Slammers' win last night and the ThunderBolts' loss, Joliet is in first place by themselves for the first time in franchise history.

A rare win...

Joliet's four hits yesterday were the fewest they've recorded in a victory. Also, the Slammers won for only the second time this year when trailing after seven innings. They are now 2-18 when trailing after seven.

Hit men...

The Slammers are 17-4 on the season when outhitting their opponents; they are only 5-14 when the other team out hits them.

Scenario...

In 16 AB's with runners in scoring position during his first professional season, David Fox has eight hits and 12 RBI. Brad Netzel has also been very good in the clutch as he is hitting .351 in 37 AB's with runners in scoring position.

Craziness...

The Slammers have 15 comeback wins this season but are only 4-18 when trailing after six. When they lead after six, opponents might as well give up as the Slammers have a 17-0 mark in that scenario.

Hey now you're an all-star...

The Slammers have four players headed to the 2011 Frontier League All-Star Game in Avon, Ohio, which will take place on July 13. Three of the players have local connections. Oak Lawn native Erik Lis will start for the East Division at first base. The slugger has a team-high 9 HR and 38 RBI on the season. New Lenox native Josh Flores will start in the outfield. He has a team-leading 16 stolen bases and has saved numerous runs with his glove and his arm. Joliet native Ryan Quigley leads the league in saves with 15 and is the Slammers' lone pitcher on the All-Star roster. Last but not least, rookie outfielder Bobby Leeper made the team as a reserve thanks in large part to his .882 OPS.
