Johnstown Hosts Final Chiefs Game On Saturday

April 1, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Johnstown Chiefs will host their final ECHL game on Saturday at Cambria County War Memorial Arena when they host the Elmira Jackals at 7:05 p.m.

Johnstown is the only one of the ECHL's original five teams that has played every one of its 22 seasons in the same city. The Chiefs advanced to the Riley Cup Finals in the ECHL's inaugural season, 1988-89, where they lost to the Carolina Thunderbirds in seven games.

The Chiefs enter tomorrow night's game at Cincinnati with an all-time record of 669-683-164. The 669 wins are the third-most in league history, trailing only Wheeling (756) and South Carolina (673). Johnstown and Wheeling, which relocated from Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1992, share the ECHL record for games played at 1,516.

In the league's first season, Johnstown had both the Rookie of the Year, Tom Sasso who finished second with 101 points (36g-65a), and Goaltender of the Year, Scott Gordon, who led the league with a 3.82 goals-against average. Gordon, who is in his second season as head coach of the New York Islanders, became the first ECHL player to play in the National Hockey League when he made his debut with the Quebec Nordiques against the Buffalo Sabres on Jan. 30, 1990.
