Bowie Baysox News Release

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Bowie Baysox reeled off their third win in a row Wednesday, 7-1 over the Harrisburg Senators, and have clinched the road series after enduring their longest losing streak in eight years. The 15-12 Baysox are still in third place in their division, four games behind Altoona, but trail Richmond for second by just half a game.

Right-handed Baysox starter Steve Johnson had an outstanding performance on the hill, lasting seven innings with one run off just four hits and a season-high nine strikeouts.

Second baseman Ryan Adams was the top offensive performer, matching a season best by going 4-for-5 at the plate while scoring three runs. The Baysox outhit the Senators by a margin of 14 hits to five.

Adams got the Baysox going right away in the top of the first inning with a one-out double up the gap, his team-leading tenth double of the year. Left fielder Tyler Henson was right behind him with a grounder single past the shortstop to extend his hit streak to four games and send Adams to third. Third baseman Brandon Waring sent Adams across the plate with a sacrifice fly to right to open the scoring. The Baysox are 10-0 in games when they score the first run.

It was Adams again leading off the third inning as the second baseman picked up a base hit to left field. Henson followed by going down swinging, but Adams got a good jump and stole second base on the third strike. Waring hit a single to left-center that moved Adams to third, where he was able to score from on first baseman Robbie Widlansky's ground ball single to left which moved Waring to second. Center fielder Danny Figueroa continued the hit parade with a single up the middle that plated Waring. Widlansky capped off the scoring by going from second to home on catcher Caleb Joseph's single up the gap into left field. When the dust had settled, the Baysox were off to a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Henson added on to his team-leading RBI total with his 18th of the year in the top of the fourth frame with a double to center field that sent Adams all the way around to home from first base.

Harrisburg's Leonard Davis led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle of the diamond, and was driven home on the next play by outfielder Jesus Valdez's double to left that prevented the Senators from being shut out in consecutive games.

Joseph delivered a finishing blow in the top of the fifth with a one-out blast to left that also plated Danny Figueroa, who had reached base with an expertly delivered bunt down the third base line. His first home run of the year made it 7-1 and came on a good night for Joseph, who went 3-for-5 to fight a slump that has seen his batting average hover around the Mendoza line.

Bowie made a defensive substitution in the bottom of the sixth after the Figueroa twins collided in the outfield trying to catch a fly ball hit by Valdez. Danny Figueroa came off the field after a brief evaluation by trainer Joe Benge and was replaced in center field by Miguel Abreu. Apart from that, the rest of the game went smoothly, as Senators shortstop Danny Espinosa's single off reliever Jim Hoey in the eighth was the only hit that Harrisburg got in the final five innings.

Hoey and Chad Thall each got an inning of work in and continued the dominant form of the Baysox relief staff, who have not given up an earned run since April 28. The bullpen's collective ERA is down to an impressive 2.14.

The Baysox hope to pull off their second-straight sweep of the Harrisburg Senator's in Thursday's game four at 7 p.m. They will then head to Trenton for a three-game set over the weekend before they come back to Bowie on May 10 to open a series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

That first game back will be the Baysox inaugural Beard-a-Palooza, where any fan with a beard may purchase half-priced lower reserved seat tickets ($7) for the game, limit one per beard. Fans who cannot grow a beard are encouraged to make one! Between-inning contests include "What's In the Beard" and longest and most colorful beards.
