JetHawks Topple Blaze Late, 4-3

July 29, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A pair of dingers spotted Bakersfield a mid-game lead, but the Blaze could not hang on, committing a key error late that helped the visiting Lancaster Jethawks complete the comeback and knock off the Blaze in the homestand opener, 4-3, on Throwback Thursday at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.

Eddie Campbell got the starting nod for the Blaze, and though he surrendered a run in the 2nd, Eddie settled in nicely, working into the 7th with a two run lead.

That lead, though, would evaporate. Lancaster's Drew Ferguson, who ended his night going a perfect 4-for-4, homered to cut his team's hole in half, and later in the inning, a walk, a double and a miscue on defense scored the Jethawks' tying run.

One inning later, Ferguson did it again, doubling in the tie-breaking run to give Lancaster a 4-3 lead. Kody Kerski (L, 2-2) took the defeat, while Scott Weathersby (W, 4-5) got the win and Jacob Dorris (S, 8) collected his 8th save without missing a chance.

The Blaze certainly had some opportunities. Tyler Marlette's two-run homer gave the club the lead in the 3rd inning, and Drew Jackson (who also went 4-for-4) hit a solo shot in the 5th for a 3-1 edge, but the team could not get runners home without the longball. In all, the Blaze went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and though Lancaster went only 1-for-8, that one broke the tie. One hit and one error loomed large, and the Blaze will look for the bounceback in the next one.

The homestand and series continues on Friday night in another 7:30pm start on Spongebob Squarepants Jersey Auction Night and the Blaze's first Pokemon Go celebration. Gates open at 6:30pm. Make sure to check out Facebook.com/BakersfieldBlaze for all the info on our wild night of prizes.
