Jerry "The King" Lawler to Appear at Steel Game
November 7, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel, 2017 USHL Clark Cup Champions, announced Tuesday that professional wrestling legend and World Wrestling Entertainment ("WWE") commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler will appear at "Stone Cold Steel Night" on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, when the team squares off against Team USA (U18). Lawler, a 2007 WWE Hall of Fame inductee, will sign autographs and take pictures with fans at the 7:05 p.m. game inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, while also dropping the ceremonial first puck.
Lawler, 67, is widely considered to be one of the greatest performers in the history of the squared circle. Still occasionally wrestling to this day, he has won 168 championships throughout his 47-year career, including 28 reigns as the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion. The Memphis, Tenn., native notoriously feuded with Andy Kaufman in the 1980s, including an infamous slap to the comedian's face during a 1982 episode of Late Night with David Letterman. The feud was recreated in the 1999 biographical comedy-drama film, Man on the Moon, in which Lawler played himself, while the late Kaufman was portrayed by Jim Carrey.
"We are thrilled to have wrestling royalty with us for Stone Cold Steel Night at Fox Valley Ice Arena," said Steel President Dan Lehv. "The Steel are the reigning kings of the USHL as the Clark Cup Champions, and having Jerry Lawler join us January 20th will make for an exciting night of top-rope entertainment for our fans."
Lawler joined the WWE, then known as the World Wrestling Federation ("WWF"), in late 1992, and served as the company's television color commentator for most of the past 25 years, including the "Attitude Era" (Nov. 1997 to May 2002), pro wrestling's most popular timeframe in history.
In addition to Lawler's appearance, Stone Cold Steel Night will feature a variety of special pro wrestling promotions for fans in attendance, including contests on and off the ice, wrestling entrance music, themed videos, and more.
Tickets to all Steel home games, including Stone Cold Steel Night, start at just $10 when purchased in advance and parking is always free at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
