September 6, 2013 - Arena Football League (AFL) - Philadelphia Soul
PHILADELPHIA (September 6, 2013) - The back-to-back American Conference Champion Philadelphia Soul announce that 2012 Ironman of the Year WR/KR Jeff Hughley (5'8, 175, Averett) returns to the team after being acquired via a trade with the Jacksonville Sharks in exchange for DB Kent Richardson (6'0, 200, West Virginia). The Soul also acquired DB Maurice Leggett (6'0, 195, Valdosta State), OL Neil Tivis (6'5, 320, Abilene Christian) and DB Dion Turner (6'0, 200, Southern Utah) in the AFL's Off-Season Assignment Process.
"We are very excited with the moves we made today," said Soul general manager Tom Goodhines. "Hughley is a dynamic player that immediately improves our return game and we have added depth with Leggett, Tivis and Turner. We are pleased with our start to the off-season and our plans to return to the ArenaBowl."
"Jeff is an extremely talented player," said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel. "He brings an extra dimension that teams need to account for on special teams and his ability to make tacklers miss made him a threat to return any kick return or turn any reception into a touchdown."
While with Jacksonville in 2013, Hughley had 82 receptions for 889 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Sharks. He also added 2,129 all-purpose yards, including 1,095 kickoff return yards.
While with the Soul in 2012, the Ironman of the Year hauled in 77 receptions for 1,001 yards and 19 touchdowns for an average of 13.1 yards per catch and 55.6 per game. He returned 92 kicks for 1,865 yards and five touchdowns. His longest return was for 58 yards and he averaged 20.3 per return. Hughley was the team's leader in all-purpose yardage with 2,885 total yards on the season and has added 24.5 total tackles.
In 2011, he had eight games with at least five receptions, four games with double-digit receptions, and six games with at least 100 yards. Hughley spent time with the Tulsa Talons (2007-10) and was No. 2 in the League in 2010 for all-purpose yards (2,808), and No. 4 in all-purpose yards per game (175.5). In 2009, he was awarded as the af2 Ironman of the Year. While attending Averett, Hughley set school records including: leader in yards (2,925), receptions (221), and touchdowns (31).
