(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Jason Jones has been transferred from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A) to Trenton. RHP Jason Stephens has been sent back to Tampa to make room for Jones.
Jones started for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 8th vs. Syracuse. He took the loss as he gave up three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. He has made two starts this season for the Yankees and is 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA (11 1/3 innings). He is 11-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 11 starts for the Thunder this season. He has struck out 78 and walked 41 in 124 2/3 innings. He has the sixth lowest ERA in the Eastern League, and is tied for the third most wins in the Eastern League. Jones started the Eastern League All-Star Game for the Northern Division squad. He won his first seven decisions this season. Last season, Jones was 8-11 with a 3.62 ERA in 28 G (19 starts) for Trenton. In 2006, he went 4-3 with a 4.83 ERA in 10 G (9 starts) for Trenton. His 23 wins is fourth all-time on the Thunder career list. He was originally a fourth round pick by the Yankees in the 2004 draft.
Stephens made one start for the Thunder in the first game of a doubleheader on August 8th vs. Akron. He received a no-decision as he went 5 1/3 innings. He gave up only three hits and two runs. He struck out nine and walked two. He has split the remainder of his season between Charleston (Low-A) and Tampa. He was 2-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 17 G (8 starts) for the River Dogs, including one save. Stephens had 52 strikeouts and 10 walks in 59 2/3 innings. For Tampa, he went 3-5 with a 5.30 ERA in eight starts. He gave up 56 hits in 35 2/3 innings, with 21 strikeout and 57 walks. Opponents were hitting .376 against him in the Florida State League. Last season, Stephens pitched primarily for the Staten Island Yankees (New York-Penn). He went 4-1 with a 1.88 ERA in nine games (seven starts). Stephens also made two starts for the Gulf Coast League Yankees. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Stephens was originally selected in the sixth round of the 2003 draft.
Trenton plays the middle game of a three-game series tonight against the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
