Jamestown Comes into Newark and Wins in Extras

NEWARK, NY (6.10.17) - The Newark Pilots (1-8) fell at home to the Jamestown Jammers (8-2) 14-10 in 11 innings to run their losing streak up to 8 games. Newark took an early 6 nothing lead in the bottom of the first, then added one in the second to go up 7-0. Jamestown scored runs in the third, fourth, and sixth to cut the lead to 7-4. The Pilots put up 2 in the bottom of the eighth to go up 9-4 heading into the ninth. Then the Jammers found a way to tie it up at 9 in the ninth scoring 5 runs on 1 hit, 5 walks, and one big error in the inning.

Peter Battaglia (Niagara) kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first with a bases clearing 3-run triple. He came around to score on a Tanner Huddleston (Jones County JC) sacrifice fly. Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic) then hit a two-out 2-run double to round out the scoring in the first. The Pilots added a run in the second on a Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) single to go up 7-0.

Jamestown added a run in the third on a Ben Brookover (UTSA) single. The Jammers got two in the fourth on a John Conti (Canisius) 2-run single. And one in the sixth on a Conti sacrifice bunt to cut the lead to 7-4.

Newark scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-4 lead going into the ninth. One run came on a Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) single, and the second run scored on the same play when Center Fielder Skyler Valentine (UTSA) allowed a ball to get under his glove.

The Jammers got to Pilots Closer Jake Bernardo (Fordham) in the top of the ninth after allowing 5 runs on just one hit and 4 walks. Connor Rule (Kansas State), Christian Deaton (Canisius), and Conti walked in a run off of Bernardo. Christ Conley (Canisius) drove in a run with a hit by pitch, and Brookover walked in a run off of Jordan Miller (Coastal Alabama CC).

The two teams exchanged runs in the tenth. Jamestown got theirs on a fielders choice with the bases loaded by Deaton, and Newark scored on a single by Po-Chuan Pan.

It was 10-10 heading into the eleventh when the Jammers put the game out of reach. They scored two runs off of both Miller and John Balliet (Orange Coast CC) to go up 14-10, they would win by the same score. Jimmy Standohar (Mercyhurst) scored on a single by Chris Estrada (UTSA), Brookover and Estrada then came around to score on the same play thanks to errors by the Center Fielder D'Marcus Guillory (Motlow State CC) and Shortstop Tyler Odekirk (Irvine Valley CC). They added their fourth run on the inning on a bases loaded walk to Conti.

Connor Ryan (Mercyhurst) picks up the win in relief, throwing 3 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and 1 earned run. Miller picks up the blown save and the loss for the Pilots, going 1.1 innings, 0 hits, 3 runs (2er), 5 walks and 1 strikeout. Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung University) took the no-decision after tossing 5 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs (1er), 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

Brookover went 5-5 with a double, 2 runs batted in and a run scored, he also walked twice. Deaton went 1-2 with 5 walks, 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored, and Conti drove in 5 runs for the Jammers. Odekirk scored 3 runs for the Pilots, Battaglia scored 2 and drove in 3. Pan went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 runs batted in.
