Week in Review

Home at last

The Jackals have played just 25 home games in their first 58 games, tied with the South Carolina Stingrays for the fewest home games played in the ECHL. Starting this week, the Jackals play nine consecutive home games, with three games in each of the next three weeks.

In 25 home games, the Jackals are 8-14-3-0, with points in three of the last four (2-1-1-0). They have a -15 goal differential, with 70 goals for and 85 goals against. They average 2.60 goals per game on home ice, well above their season average of 2.24 goals per game. Both their power play and penalty kill are also better at home, placing in the top 10 in the league in both categories. They are at 19.7% on the power play and 86.6% on the penalty kill at First Arena.

Road streak snapped

The Jackals ended their 12-game road winless streak with Saturday's triumph over the Norfolk Admirals. Before their 6-3 win, the Jackals hadn't won on the road since Jan. 20 in Manchester, posting a 0-10-1-1 record during the league-long streak.

In the win, the Jackals scored a season-high six road goals, boosting their road goals per game to 1.82.

Game 55: Jackals lose in resumption of suspended game, 4-3

The Jackals outscored the Reading Royals, 3-2, Feb. 28 during the remaining 46:07 of a suspended game from Feb. 17, but lost the game, 4-3. Reading entered the night with a 2-0 lead from the first 13:53 that was played on Feb. 17.

The Royals built on their 2-0 lead in the second period, first getting a goal on a shot from Olivier Labelle at 1:43 and then from Ryan Penny at 16:28, giving Reading a 4-0 lead into the third period. From there the Jackals nearly came all the way back. Davis Vandane opened the third period with a breakaway goal just 47 seconds into the period.

Less than two minutes later, Luke Sandler scored his first goal with the Jackals at 2:10 of the final frame to make it a 4-2 game. After the Royals had a goal waved off because the puck was batted in with a high stick, the Jackals got within one at 8:12 when Kenton Miller buried a shorthanded goal on a pass from Casey Thrush. The Jackals pushed late, but couldn't find the equalizer in a 4-3 loss.

Game 56: Andy Iles leads Elmira to 2-1 win over Manchester

The Jackals scored twice in the first period and Andy Iles made 38 saves as the Jackals beat the Manchester Monarchs, 2-1, Mar. 1 at First Arena.

Mark Bennett opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:39, firing home the puck into an open net after a scramble in the crease got goalie Sam Brittain out of position. 50 seconds later, the Jackals went up 2-0 on a left circle shot from Matt Stanisz. Brittain got a piece of the shot, but it leaked through his arm and trickled over the line at 7:29.

The Monarchs got their only goal 7:08 into the second period on a 2-on-1 rush between Matt Letiner and Joe Diamond. Leitner found Diamond for a one-timer at the right circle, which Iles got a glove on, but not enough to make the save. Iles was terrific the rest of the way in earning the Jackals fourth win over Manchester this season.

Game 57: Slow start leads to loss against Norfolk

The Norfolk Admirals scored three goals in the first period and used that opening 20 minutes to sail past the Jackals, 5-2, Mar. 3 at the Norfolk Scope.

The Admirals three-goal first period barrage began at 11:20 on a shorthanded goal from Paul Rodrigues on a wrister from the circle. Jack Lewis doubled the lead at 14:14 with a wraparound goal and then T.J. Foster made it 3-0 at 17:51, scoring on a breakaway.

The Jackals regrouped in the second period and got within one after 40 minutes. Sam Povorozniouk snapped home his 15th goal of the season with a power-play goal at 10:25 of the second. Less than two minutes later, Kenton Miller scored his 21st on a rebound in the crease to make it 3-2. The Jackals ran out of steam in the third and the Admirals got goals from John Dunbar at 6:30 and Ben Betker at 11:11 to come out with a 5-2 decision.

Game 58: Jackals offense comes to life in trouncing of Admirals

Five players scored for the Jackals as they cruised past the Norfolk Admirals, 6-3, Mar. 4 at the Norfolk Scope.

The Jackals played a strong first period to open a 2-0 lead on the road. Sebastien Sylvestre started things with a power-play goal just three minutes into the game on a snapper from the right circle. Charlie Mosey bookended the period with a spin-around shot from the slot for his fourth goal of the season at 19:32. The teams traded goals in the second, with the Admirals striking on a power-play goal by Gabriel Verpaelst at 12:17, which was immediately answered on a rebound goal from Casey Thrush just 13 seconds later, giving Elmira a 3-1 lead.

The Jackals ran away with it in the third period. Ian Young began a three-goal barrage with a point shot at 6:04, which was followed three minutes later with a Matt Lane deflection goal at 9:04. Sylvestre capped the Jackals run with his second goal at 10:54, which gave the Jackals a 6-1 lead. Norfolk scored two goals in 32 seconds to get within 6-3, but that was as close as they would get.

Week Ahead

Game 59: Thu., Mar. 9 vs. Norfolk Admirals, 7:05 p.m.

Game 60: Fri., Mar. 10 vs. Norfolk Admirals, 7:05 p.m.

The Jackals and Norfolk Admirals shift their two-week series from Virginia to New York as they play the third and fourth head-to-head meetings in an eight day stretch, beginning Thursday night at First Arena. They are the final two matches of the nine-game season series, with Norfolk winning four games and the Jackals winning three in the first seven games of the series. They split the two games at the Norfolk Scope last week.

The Admirals enter the week with four wins over their last 10 games (4-6-0-0) and back-to-back losses to move to 21-32-4-0 on the season. At 46 points, Norfolk has closed the gap to four points behind Atlanta, but remain in seventh place in the South Division. After a two-game stop in Elmira, the Admirals continue their road trip Sunday in Manchester to close the weekend.

The Admirals, who were in the cellar offensively the first few months of the season, have risen to 22nd in the league with 2.84 goals per game. T.J. Foster, acquired from Orlando, has helped boost their offense with 34 points (15g, 19a) in 35 games with Norfolk. Overall he has 39 points (17g, 22a) in 47 games between the Admirals and Solar Bears. John Dunbar is second with 33 points (15g, 18a) in 47 games.

Brandon Anderson and Philippe Desrosiers are Norfolk's two goalies entering the week. Anderson is 11-9-0 with a 3.51 goals-against average and an .890 save percentage. He has three shutouts, which came in three straight games at the beginning of 2017, including one over Elmira. Desrosiers appears to have taken the number one spot, playing in nine games with Norfolk since being reassigned by AHL-Texas. He is 5-3-0 with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. Mix in his 13 appearances with Idaho and he is 10-6-0-2 with a 3.56 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.

Game 61: Sat., Mar. 11 vs. Reading Royals, 7:05 p.m.

The Jackals and Reading Royals conclude the 2016-17 DeMet's Candy Cup Challenge as both teams wrap up three-in-three weeks Saturday night at First Arena. Reading has won the DeMet's Candy Cup Challenge for the third straight season, posting an 8-1-0-0 record in the series so far. The Jackals lone win came Jan. 14 in Elmira.

The Royals have had an up-and-down season, but they remain in the thick of the North Division race and have three wins in their last four games. They have the most wins in the division and are 34-21-1-2 on the season. At 71 points, the Royals enter the week tied with Brampton for second place, just two points behind the Manchester Monarchs for the division lead.

Robbie Czarnik (19g, 28a) and Justin Crandall (16g, 31a) are tied for the team lead with 47 points in 52 games. Chris McCarthy also has 47 points in just 43 games, but he is currently on recall in Lehigh Valley. Both Czarnik and Crandall have tormented the Jackals to the tune of 13 points in the season series.

In net Martin Ouellette and Mark Dekanich have split time for Reading with Ouellette appearing in 26 games and Dekanich in 31. Ouellette is 12-11-0-1 with a 2.79 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. Dekanich is 17-10-1-1 with a 2.89 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage, including a shutout against the Jackals Feb. 19. Dekanich has won his last five decisions and seven of his last eight.
