Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals returned home from a five game road trip and treated a sellout crowd of over 3,800 to a thrilling 6-5 overtime win over the Orlando Solar Bears on Saturday night. The win improved Elmira's record to 34-21-7 on the season.

Elmira was held to two goals in Thursday's loss in Trenton, but used some accurate shots to equal that total in the first period alone on Saturday. Jordon Southorn opened things nine minutes into the game with his 10th goal of the season. His slap shot from the left point hit goalie Patrick Killeen and deflected under the cross bar. Jordan Pietrus doubled the lead at 13:13 with a blast from the right wing hash that beat Killeen high to the blocker side. Orlando didn't go away quietly, though, with C.J. Severyn scoring off of the rush with 1:11 left in the period to pull the Solar Bears within one before intermission. Maxime Clermont, who made his third straight start, stopped eight of nine in the frame while Killeen was 13 of 15 for Orlando.

The second period saw the teams trade a goal apiece which left Elmira with the same lead it had after one. Andrew Rowe and Matt Carter worked a cycle down low and allowed for Jean Bourbeau to pop loose in the left wing circle. Carter's pass was on point for Bourbeau to one-time past Killeen for his 18th of the season. The Solar Bears bounced back just 1:08 later with former Jackal Dale Mahovsky picking up his seventh to draw the visitors back within one. Elmira had the shot advantage in the second again, although not by as wide of a margin, at 9-7.

The third period turned into a goal-scoring free-for-all with five total going on the board. Orlando captain Ryan Cruthers tied the game 3:22 in by scoring off of the rush. Elmira pushed back on a shorthanded goal by Brandon Blandina which was set up by Rowe. The lead didn't last long because 5:03 later Mahovsky picked up his second of the night in controversial fashion. The Jackals disputed the goal because they felt it never fully crossed the line, but the goal stood and Jackals coach Dwight Mullins was hit with a game misconduct for protesting. His team rallied, though, and Chaz Johnson whipped home his ninth at 14:25 to restore the lead. But, once again, Orlando battled back and picked up a tying goal. This time it was Rob Mignardi tipping home a power play goal from the doorstep that eventually sent the game to overtime.

Elmira made quick work of the extra session and launched three shots on Killeen in the first 33 seconds. The third one, coming off the stick of Rowe, did the trick and sealed the win for the Jackals. Rowe had four points in the game (1G, 3A) and became the fourth Jackal to hit that high water mark this season.

Clermont earned his 17th win of the season with 19 saves. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
