Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals opened their 2010-2011 preseason on Thursday night at First Arena, falling 5-3 to the Reading Royals. The Jackals close out exhibition play on Friday at 7:35 p.m. at First Arena against the Trenton Devils.

Andrew Sarauer led the way for the Royals, scoring two goals, including the first of the game at 10:58 of the first period with assists to Louis Liotti and John Scrymgeour. Sarauer also recorded an assist in the contest for a game-high three points.

At 12:16, Eric Lampe gave the Jackals their first goal, beating Royals goaltender Adam Courchane five hole from the low left side to even the score 1-1. Chris Frank notched an assist on the play.

Maxime Renaud gave Reading its second lead of the game, firing a puck from the right point that soared through a screen and past Jackals goaltender Marco Cousineau to make it 2-1 at 2:51 of the second period.

Mark Magnowski tied the game back up at 12:47 of the second, following up a rebound from his own shot and knocking it past Courchane to make it 2-2, with assists to Blake Gallagher and R.J. Anderson.

Walker Wintoneak knocked a deflected puck from a Sarauer feed at 16:26 of the second period to give Reading a 3-2 advantage.

With Reading's John Mori getting a game misconduct for kneeing early in the third, the Jackals had a major power play and wasted no time in evening the score. Brad Miller's wrist shot from the middle point found the back of the net four seconds into the advantage with Dustin Cameron setting an effective screen in front, and the Jackals tied the game 3-3 at 4:19 of the final period.

However, the Royals bounced right back, as Scrymgeour backhanded a puck with his team short handed over the glove of Cousineau from the right circle to give Reading a 4-3 lead at 8:47 of the third.

Sarauer sealed the game for the Royals, knocking in a loose puck from a Ben Gordon shot at 11:15 with Reading on the power play to make it 5-3, capping the scoring for the evening.

Cousineau made 30 saves on 35 shots in the loss. Courchane picked up the victory, stopping 23 of 26 bids.

The Jackals and the Trenton Devils battle in Elmira's final tune-up on Friday at 7:35 p.m. at First Arena before the ECHL's regular season commences next week.
