Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals lost a hard-fought battle 4-2 to the Wheeling Nailers on Friday night at First Arena. The loss left the Jackals' record at 9-8-1 heading into a pair of games in Trenton to finish the week.

Elmira had the game in control at the onset and registered the first three shots on goal, but Wheeling goaltender Scott Darling was dialed in and kept the Jackals from grabbing the early lead. That led to Wheeling cashing in off of the rush to go up 1-0. Cam Fergus snapped a wrist shot over the catching glove of Marc Cheverie at 7:09 to give the visitors the advantage. Cheverie slammed the door from there and turned in 12 total saves in the first. Darling was one better, though, and made a handful of tough saves, including stopps against Rob Bellamy and Jean Bourbeau on separate breakaways, to preserve Wheeling's 1-0 advantage.

In the second period, Elmira worked diligently to erase the one-goal deficit. The Jackals were out-shooting the Nailers 6-3 for the period when Chaz Johnson collected a loose puck in the high slot and blasted home his first goal of the season. The goal at 13:49 was Johnson's first home goal for Elmira since March 31, 2010 and was assisted by Chris Wideman. Wheeling didn't allow the game to remain tied long as Chris Minella sent a wrist shot past Cheverie at 15:08 to restore Wheeling's one-goal lead. Elmira doggedly worked to tie the game before the end of the period and, while they couldn't solve Darling again, they did draw a late penalty that carried over to the start of the third.

In the final stanza Louie Caporusso set up Artem Demkov with a perfect pass between the circles that the Jackals' center whipped home for his ninth goal of the season. The goal was Demkov's sixth on the power play. It took all of 47 seconds for the Jackals to even the score at two each. Kyle Bushee also assisted and set a new career best by extending his point streak to five games. Five minutes and 10 seconds later, though, Wheeling's Kevin Veilleux restored the one-goal lead with a wrist shot from between the circles. The Jackals put their offense in high gear and totaled 17 shots for the third, but could not feed another puck across the line. Philippe Lefebvre backhanded a shot through Cheverie's pads for the final goal at 17:07.

Cheverie finished the night with 24 saves in taking the loss. The Jackals were 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
