 Brandon Wheat Kings

It's a Wheat King-Blades Weekend

March 11, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Saskatoon, SK. - With so much on the line, the Brandon Wheat Kings kick off a weekend home and home series with the Blades in Saskatoon Friday night.

The Wheat Kings enter the second-to-last weekend of the regular season with a record of 43-18-4-2 and sit two points up on the second place Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference.

While Brandon takes on the Blades this weekend, the 'Canes are busy playing three games in as many nights, beginning Friday night against Red Deer.

With a closer look at the two teams schedules heading into the final week of the 2015-16 regular season:

Wheat Kings:

Home: Sat. March 12th vs. Saskatoon, Tue. March 15th vs. Swift Current, Friday, March 18th vs. Moose Jaw and Saturday, March 19th vs. Regina

Away: Tonight in Saskatoon

Lethbridge Hurricanes:

Home: Tonight vs Red Deer, Sunday, March 13th vs Edmonton and Friday, March 18th vs. Medicine Hat

Away: Sat. March 12th at Red Deer and Saturday, March 19th at Medicine Hat

The Wheat Kings will open up the WHL playoffs with games one and two scheduled for Thursday and Good Friday, March 24th and 25th at Westman Place. Due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, the Wheat Kings will then play the next three games on the road before closing the best of seven series back in Brandon during the week of April 4th.

Tickets to the first two playoff games go on sale at 11am Friday at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com

Following this weekend, Brandon will close out the regular season with home games against Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Regina on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights respectively.

The Wheat Kings appear to be hitting their stride at the just the right time as the regular season winds down. Since Christmas, they've been on a tear and lead the league in goals scored. That offence was certainly on display last week when they scored 33 goals in posting four straight victories. Defenceman Ivan Provorov had a big week with five goals and nine points for Brandon but he wasn't alone. 17-year old center Nolan Patrick had 12 points last week while Jayce Hawryluk, who was named the WHL Player of the Week, exploded for ten goals and 16 points. Both Patrick and Hawryluk are both closing in on the 100-point mark as well.

On the injury front meanwhile, three players including local products Connor Gutenberg (lower body) and Ty Lewis (upper body) skated this past week with former Swan Valley Stampeder Linden McCorrister (upper body). However, Jaeger White - who suffered an upper body injury during last Wednesday's win over Saskatoon, underwent surgery last weekend and will miss the balance of the season. In 39 games this season, White has a goal and four points.

This Saturday's game is a presentation of Tim Hortons Westman, with five locations in Brandon and another on the Trans Canada in Virden.
