**PREVIOUS ISLANDERS EVENTS: Where the Islanders have been

HAWAIIAN ISLANDERS FOOTBALL TRAINING CAMP

* Training Camp Opens as Players Compete for Final 21 Spots One thing is certain after the first week of the Hawaiian Islanders training camp. The anticipation and expectations are extremely high.

“The players came into camp in great shape,” said Islander Head Coach Cal Lee. “I’m glad our players are committed to compete at this level.” Of the 35 players in camp, 16 are newcomers and according to Lee, they are pushing the veterans for starting positions.

“We’ve got very enthusiastic guys (newcomers) out there and they are doing a great job,” Lee said. “Now we’ll see how they perform with helmets and pads on.”

Among the newcomers that will compete for positions include former UH football star Eddie Klaneski who played for the af2’s Fresno Frenzy last season.

Former UH lineman Matt Elam, who was rated the strongest player for the Rainbows during the 1999 season. Wide receiver Channon Harris who caught 177 passes for the University of Hawaii in from 1999-2001 and former University of Utah standout Roy Maafala, who is the older brother of NFL’s Chris Fuumatu-Maafala.

Among the returning Islanders back for season two include starters Darnell Arceneaux, Nian Taylor, Darrell Jones, Chris Paogofie and Kimo Naehu. “We’ve got a good group of veterans who can provide leadership in key areas,” Lee said.

Training camp continues with daily practices at 7 p.m. at St. Louis High School. The Islanders trimmed their roster from 35 to 30 last Friday and will be down to the final 21 players by Monday, March 24.
