Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (60-72) were limited to three hits as they fell 8-1 to the Omaha Storm Chasers (56-74), Thursday at Principal Park. Iowa took a three-run deficit into the ninth, but Omaha added four runs in the final frame to roll to victory.

Jeimer Candelario headed Iowa's offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with the team's only RBI. The third baseman has a hit in 11 straight games and has reached base safely in each of his last 30 contests.

Omaha got on the board first with a second-inning run and extended its lead to 4-0 after three. Three consecutive doubles followed by a single with two outs accounted for the Storm Chasers' trio of runs in the third.

Iowa starter Drew Rucinski (6-14) settled in after that and retired 10 of the next 11 batters before surrendering the ball to Corey Black in the eighth. He ended up with the loss as Iowa couldn't make up ground.

Iowa got its first run in the fourth as Chris Coghlan - with the I-Cubs on a rehab assignment - lined a single to center field and Candelario knocked him in with a double. Coghlan played seven frames in his first game with Iowa and went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Two singles for the Storm Chasers in the ninth forced Black from the game and lefty Joe Thatcher inherited runners on the corners. The Storm Chasers only managed one hit off Thatcher, but an error and a balk helped Omaha's effort as the visiting team rallied for four late runs.

Christian Binford (3-11) took the win and Kevin McCarthy captured his fifth save of the season. Jorge Bonifacio did his share of damage with a 3-for-5 game, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
