Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (19-26) dropped the final game of the series against the El Paso Chihuahuas (25-21), 6-3 in 12 innings on Thursday afternoon at Principal Park.
Alex Sanabia got the ball for Iowa for his third start in an I-Cubs uniform. He pitched 5.2 innings striking out four, walking two and was tagged with two runs on four hits.
Manuel Margot set the tone early for El Paso when he drove the second pitch of the game over the left-field fence to put the Chihuahuas up, 1-0. Alex Dickerson followed up with a solo homer of his own in the top of the fourth, extending his hitting streak to 24 games and putting El Paso ahead, 2-0.
Iowa answered in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles by Willson Contreras and Daniel Vogelbach, pulling the I-Cubs within one. A groundout by Taylor Davis advanced Vogelbach to third, which set him up to score on the balk by Jeremy Guthrie to tie the game at two-all.
Both teams added a run in the eighth: a double off the bat of Jabari Blash for El Paso and a throwing error that allowed Kawasaki to score for Iowa. The I-Cubs put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to convert, forcing the game to extra innings.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 12th when El Paso capitalized on a rough outing by Brandon Gomes to knock in three - one off a fielder's choice by Hunter Renfroe and two off a double by Ryan Schimpf - following four walks and a hit batter.
Alex Moskos (4-0) earned the win for El Paso, throwing 1.2 innings and whiffing three I-Cubs, while Gomes (1-2) was tagged with the loss for Iowa.
Vogelbach and Juan Perez led the Iowa offense as each tallied two hits.
Iowa remains at home to open a four-game stand against the Albuquerque Isotopes, Friday at Principal Park. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
