DES MOINES - The Round Rock Express (6-6) won the home run derby at Principal Park Monday, defeating the Iowa Cubs (6-6) 10-9.
Six long balls were hit in the game with Mark Zagunis and Jeimer Candelario connecting early for Iowa, respectively logging their first and third home runs on the season. Candelario finished the day 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and leads all of Minor League Baseball with 18 RBI this season.
In a game where Iowa never led, Victor Caratini made it interesting with a game-tying grand slam in the seventh, the first of his career. He also collected a career-best five RBI today.
With the game locked at 9-9, Jared Hoying turned the tides in favor of the Express with a go-ahead RBI double to left-center in the ninth. Round Rock held on to take the series, 2-1.
Ryan Williams was chased after one inning as he worked up to 39 pitches and allowed three runs. Iowa used a season-high six pitchers and Felix Pena was the only I-Cub to hold the Express scoreless. The righty did not allow a base runner in 1.2 innings and struck out three.
Iowa hits the road tomorrow for an eight-game road trip against New Orleans and Round Rock. Follow all the action on www.iowacubs.com.
