Iowa Beats Manitoba 3-2 in a Shootout

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (1-1-0-0, 2 points) defeated the Manitoba Moose (1-0-0-1, 3 points) 3-2 in a shootout in front of 5,708 fans on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Rookie Alex Tuch broke a scoreless shootout in the fourth round, beating goalie Ondrej Pavelec for the game-winning goal. Iowa goalie Steve Michalek (1-0-0) stopped 32 of 34 shots in regulation and four of four in the shootout win. Forward Zack Mitchell became the Iowa's all time leading goal scorer with a tally and added an assist. Defenseman Zach Palmquist set up two goals for the Wild's first win of the year. Manitoba goalie Ondrej Pavelec (0-0-1) stopped 35 of 37 shots in regulation and three of four in the shootout loss. Moose forward Quinton Howden scored twice in the defeat. Iowa welcomes Grand Rapids faceoff at 7 PM in Des Moines on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first period, Manitoba opened the scoring at 4:25 of the middle frame. Forward Quinton Howden potted a pass from the corner by Andrew Copp, putting the Moose in front 1-0. Iowa countered with a power-play goal at 5:28, forward Zack Mitchell rips a one-timer past goalie Ondrej Pavelec off a pass from defenseman Zach Palmquist. Right wing Christoph Bertschy picked up the additional assist on Mitchell's first of the year and a 1-1 score.

Manitoba opened the third period with a second tally from Howden at 4:30 of the period. Howden picked up a loose puck in the slot off a centering pass from Anthony Peluso and beat Steve Michalek for his second goal of the game and third goal of the season for the 2-1 lead. Iowa took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play off a rebound goal by rookie Sam Anas. Palmquist and Mitchell each had an assist on the goal, the first of Anas' career, which tied the game 2-2.

The two teams skated through a scoreless overtime and to an eventual shootout. Neither team scored through the first three rounds. After Michalek stopped a fourth straight Moose attempt, rookie Alex Tuch went down and beat Pavelec for the game-winning goal in the shootout for the 3-2 win.

Iowa continues a seven-game home stand on Tuesday at 7 PM with the Grand Rapids Griffins. For every Tuesday game of the year, Kids Eat Free (12 and under), presented by Goodhue-Nolte and 96.5 Country. Fans are encouraged to bring costumes to the game. Those that that make donations will be given a ticket to a future Wild home game. The Costume Drive is sponsored by Lazer 103.3. Fans that present a Subway coupon will be able to purchase a ticket for $5.

The home stand continues on Oct. 21 and 22 with the Charlotte Checkers, both games are set for 7 PM. Friday night is a $2 Beer night, presented by 103 The Bus. The team also offers the first night of Collegeville, a special ticket offer for students. Saturday night is Ladies Night, with drinks specials throughout the game. Fans may enjoy Jim Beam drink specials, as well as drink specials on Barefoot Wine. The Brewdog Pack is available for purchase, which includes a Bud Light and a hot dog at the game, as well as a Bud Light after the game at Legends Bar and Grill.
