November 18, 2011 - Continental Basketball League (CBL) - Cary Invasion
The Cary Invasion and the Wilmington Sea Dawgs have announced their intentions to become charter members of the new Tobacco Road Basketball League (TRBL). The TRBL anticipates 5 to 10 teams playing during the league's inaugural season, including teams from Fayetteville, Cary, Wilmington, and the Charlotte area.
The league will begin play in April 2012 as a point series and will compete with a larger network of independent minor league teams in a national championship tournament at the conclusion of the Spring season. Details regarding the national tournament and league associations will be announced in the coming weeks.
"We are convinced that this approach, that is maintaining a regional focus and creating partnerships with other regional leagues, is good for minor league basketball. It allows better quality control, minimizes travel costs, promotes economies of scale, and provides a framework upon which we can play for a national championship." says Sea Dawgs Owner, Pete Gratale.
The Invasion handily won the Continental Basketball League (CBL) regular season and tournament championships in 2011, losing only a single game all season to the fellow TRBL member Sea Dawgs. The Sea Dawgs have been a perennial minor league contender for the last 5 seasons. The team's accomplishment's include an American Basketball Association (ABA) semi-final appearance in 2006, two Premier Basketball League (PBL) playoff appearances, and a CBL regular season championship in 2010.
The Invasion and Sea Dawgs will collectively assume day-to-day league management duties until a commissioner is appointed. ScoreTrax.com will provide score broadcasting services for all TRBL games and technology services for all TRBL teams. League operations will be funded through existing sponsorships, and qualified member teams will be charged no league fees.
