Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC--After dropping a heartbreaking game on Thursday night, the Asheville Tourists never could quite build a rally and fell Friday night to the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-2. The Tourists had won six straight home games entering this series, but will have to win the next two games in order to salvage a split.
Kannapolis scored in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Micah Johnson doubled and immediately took off for third. Tom Murphy's throw went into left field and allowed Johnson to race home. The stolen base was Johnson's minor league leading 31st of the season. He later added another to move his total up to 32.
Asheville responded immediately. Kyle Von Tungeln led off the bottom of the first with a triple and later scored on Rosell Herrera's sacrifice fly. The Tourists proceeded to load the bases with just one out, but Euclides Layer worked out the jam without allowing any further damage. The Intimidators jumped back in front with a run in the second. Zach Fisher hit his first Home Run of the season; a two-out solo shot to center, to put the visitors in front 2-1. Kannapolis then added two more in the third. Kyle Robinson drove in Jason Coats with a single to center and two batters later Fisher doubled down the left field line to plate Robinson.
The Tourists did answer with a run in the bottom of the third when Herrera scored on Murphy's sacrifice fly to right, but the Intimidators struck again in the fourth. Coats singled home Johnson with two outs and Kannapolis led 5-2.
The score remained the same the rest of the way as Layer settled into a groove. The Intimidators starting pitcher lasted seven innings and scattered seven base hits en route to his second win of the year. Asheville's bullpen pitched well as Alving Mejias, Brook Hart, and Raul Fernandez combined to toss four shutout frames while striking out six.
Fisher finished 3-for-4 with a Home Run and two doubles for the visitors while Herrera notched a pair of doubles for the T's. Murphy finished 0-for-2 with an RBI and saw his 16-game hitting streak come to an end; however, he still leads the South Atlantic League in batting average at .408. Asheville finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
