Intimidators Drive Past Greenville

June 2, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

One day after being shut out by the Greenville Drive the Kannapolis Intimidators tie a season high for runs scored in both an inning and a game, with six in the fourth and 12 total, as they won 12-3. The Intimidators move back to a game above .500.

The Intimidators (27-26) got the party started in the first inning of the game off starter Manuel Rivera who only lasted two outs into the fourth inning. In the first both Jesus Villegas and Kyle Colligan singled, and with one out, Ian Gac hit a two-run double off the base of the wall in center to take a 2-0 lead.

The Intimidators added to their lead by tying their single highest run output for an inning as they scored six runs in the fourth inning. After a strikeout started the inning, Rafael Vera singled, and with two outs, Kevin Dubler singled. Dubler was followed by an RBI-single by Daniel Wagner, a two-run single by Villegas and another single by Colligan. With two on and two out, Rivera (2-5) was lifted from the game after allowing four straight two-out singles, and the new pitcher Pedro Perez had similar success. His first batter was Gac and he sent the ball over the wall in right for a three-run home run, his fifth RBI and an 8-0 lead. Rivera went 3.2 allowing seven earned runs.

Intimidators starter Justin Collop was working well against the Drive (26-28) as he worked out of jams in the second and fourth innings. He struck out two with the bases loaded and one out in the second and got a 5-4-3 double play in the fourth with runners at the corners and one down. Collop (3-4) took his shutout into the sixth inning but allowed Chris McGuiness to lead off with a double, a runner reached on an error before Reynaldo hit his second home run in as many days, a three-run blast to make it 8-3. Drew O'Neil, Garrett Johnson and Brandon Kloess pitched scoreless in relief.

In the bottom half of that inning, the Intimidators scored four runs to combat the three scored against them in the top half of the inning. Villegas, who ended with three runs and three hits, led off with a single before Colligan doubled him home with one of his four hits. After a ground out, walk and error which scored a run, Vera hit an RBI-single and Jordan Cheatham doubled in a run down the line in left to put a cap on the scoring at 12.

Five players had multi-hit games as the Intimidators belted out their second-most his this season. The Intimidators had three doubles and a home run in the game. The nine-run winning margin is the most this season for an Intimidators victory.

With the series tied at one, one team will take a one-game advantage at 7:05 on Thursday as Matt Hopps takes to the hill for the Kannapolis Intimidators. He will be opposed by lefty Drake Britton.
