International League Names Players of the Week

August 6, 2012 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Rochester first baseman Chris Parmelee and Indianapolis pitcher Rick VandenHurk have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 30-August 5. Parmelee becomes third Red Wings player to win an IL weekly award this season, following pitchers Liam Hendriks (June 4-10) and Jeff Manship (July 16-22), while VandenHurk's honor is the fourth this season for a member of the Indians, following Justin Wilson (April 23-29 and June 11-17) and Starling Marte (June 25-July 1). VandenHurk was previously honored as IL Pitcher of the Week last season (Aug. 15-21) while with the Norfolk Tides.

CHRIS PARMELEE, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Rochester first baseman Chris Parmelee led the International League for the week with a .517 batting average, 15 hits, 5 home runs, 9 RBI, 8 runs scored, and a 1.138 slugging percentage. He now has a 15-game hitting streak during which he has raised his average on the season from .314 to .367. Rochester won all six games this week, giving the Red Wings a streak of seven straight wins overall to push the club to within just 3.5 games of a playoff berth. Despite having played in only 40 games so far this season at the Triple-A level, Parmelee leads the Red Wings with 12 home runs.

24-year-old Chris Parmelee is in his seventh season as a professional player, having come entirely as a member of the Twins organization. He made his big league debut last season hitting .355 in 21 games for the Twins. This year he has seen time in 40 games with Minnesota, posting a .204 average. Parmelee is a native of Long Beach, California.

RICK VANDENHURK, Indianapolis Indians IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Right-hander Rick Vandenhurk led the International League with two wins and 14 strikeouts this week as the 6'5" hurler helped his Indianapolis Indians inch closer to clinching the IL West Division. He turned in an excellent outing last Monday at Buffalo, striking out seven Bisons over 6.0 innings and scattering seven hits in a 6-2 Indians victory. Back home yesterday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, it seemed only Mother Nature could stop VandenHurk. After allowing a couple of early runs, VandenHurk shut down the Yankees until a 40-minute rain delay ended his night after 7.0 innings. The Indians eventually won the game 6-2 to give VandenHurk his 11th win of the season, tied for most in the International League.

27-year-old Rick VandenHurk has pitched professionally since 2003. He is a veteran of 46 games in the Major Leagues with the Marlins and Orioles. VandenHurk is a native of Eindhoven, Netherlands.
