International League Names Players of the Week

June 7, 2010 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Rochester catcher Wilson Ramos and Charlotte pitcher Carlos Torres have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 31-June 6. Ramos becomes the first Red Wing to win an IL weekly award since Brock Peterson in the final week of the 2009 season. Torres is now a two-time honoree during the 2010 campaign (April 8-11).

WILSON RAMOS, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Rochester catcher Wilson Ramos led the International League with a .522 average for the week, largely thanks to his performance from Thursday to Saturday. Ramos was just 2-10 in his first three games, but beginning Thursday he caught fire. The last three games of his week were a different story from the first three, as he hit .769 (10-13) with three doubles, five-RBI, and multiple hits in each game. He banged out five hits in five at-bats in Thursday's game alone, marking the first time all season he got more than two hits in a single game. During the three-game surge, Ramos managed to raise his season average at the Triple-A level from .173 to .229.

22-year-old Wilson Ramos is in his sixth year as a professional player, all coming within the Twins organization. He is ranked by Baseball America as the best power hitter, best defensive catcher, and the second-best prospect overall in the Minnesota farm system. Earlier this year he made his Major League debut after Twins catcher Joe Mauer went down with an injury, and responded by collecting hits in seven of his first nine big league at-bats. Ramos is a native of Valencia, Venezuela.

CARLOS TORRES, Charlotte Knights IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Right-hander Carlos Torres led the International League with 14 strikeouts for the week, featuring dominating stuff in consecutive outings for the Knights. In his Memorial Day start at Pawtucket, he matched a season-high with 10 strikeouts, holding the Red Sox to just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings, but left trailing 1-0 in a game Pawtucket went on to win 4-1, though he didn't factor in the decision. He was even better Saturday night at Lehigh Valley, as he combined with two relievers to one-hit the IronPigs for a 2-1 victory. Torres issued a leadoff walk to Willy Taveras in the 1st inning, who later scored on a groundout for what proved to be just about all the offense Lehigh Valley could muster. Torres surrendered a single to Neil Sellers in the 2nd inning, but he corrected that mistake by picking Sellers off of first base. He didn't give up another hit for the rest of his 6.1 innings, earning his fourth win of the season. Torres is now tied for the League-lead with 73 strikeouts on the year.

27-year-old Carlos Torres is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher, all coming within the White Sox organization. In 2009 he was named by MLB.com as the Triple-A Starting Pitcher of the Year on the strength of his International League-best 2.39 ERA in 23 games for the Knights. Torres is a native of Santa Cruz, California.
