Tribe Talk...
Since You've Been Gone - Kinston dropped 2 of 3 at Myrtle Beach over the weekend, only the fourth series they've dropped this season. Kinston has finished up the first half winning 16 of their last 19 games, with all three losses coming at the hands of the Pelicans. The last team not named Myrtle Beach to beat the K-Tribe was Wilmington back on May 29th. Kinston is hitting a Carolina League best .318 as a team in June. They also lead the League in May with a 3.54 ERA. The K-Tribe is 14-3 in the month so far.
Streak Continues - Wes Hodges extended his hitting streak to 17 games on Sunday, the longest on the team this season and now the second longest in the Carolina League this year. Potomac's Marcos Yepez had a 24 game streak come to an end on June 6th. Hodges is hitting .443 during his hit streak. He also has a 20 game consecutive on base streak going, the longest on the team this season. Nathan Panther is right along with him with a current 19 game on base streak.
Speaking of Panther - Kinston's Nathan Panther is the Carolina Leaguer Player of the Week for the last week of the first half of the season. Panther hit .500 (9-18), with five runs, eight RBI, two home runs and a .889 slugging percentage. Panther also picked up a save with his first appearance of the season on the mound as Kinston literally ran out of arms in their final series of the first half. Panther's batting average is now at a season high .274. He has nine home runs and 20 RBI on the year. Panther joins Chris Gimenez as the only Indians to nab the Player of the Week Award this season. Kinston Pitcher David Huff took Pitcher of the Week honors for the last week in April.
Home Run King - Chris Gimenez picked up the title by knocking 12 home runs to win the home run derby in the All-Star event on Tuesday. Gimenez has 15 homers on the season, the second most in the Carolina League. Gimenez was 0-2 during the All-Star Game. The Carolina League All-Star squad lost to the California League All-Stars 10-5 in the mid-summer classic on Tuesday. How did the other K-Tribe representatives do?: Max Ramirez (0-2), Jim Deters (struck out the one batter he faced), Frank Herrmann (1 IP, 2 hits, one earned run). Manager Mike Sarbaugh, Pitching Coach Tony Arnold and Trainer Chad Wolfe where on the coaching staff for the Carolina League All-Stars.
