Indianapolis Walks off with Win in 12 Innings

July 31, 2017 - International League (IL) - Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Pawtucket Red Sox climbed ahead in extra innings but lost in the 12th, as the Indianapolis Indians walked off with a 3-2 victory in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.

The PawSox (54-53) initially tied the game 1-1 in the seventh and pulled ahead 2-1 in the top of the 10th before the Indians (59-49) leveled the score in the bottom half of the 10th and walked off on an RBI wall ball to left field from shortstop Kevin Newman in the 12th. Pawtucket, which struck out a season-high 19 times, returns home Tuesday following the split in the four-game series to conclude the eight-game road trip.

In his return to the Red Sox organization, Pawtucket starter Justin Haley dealt six effective innings of one-run ball. Haley, who was returned this week from the Minnesota Twins via the Rule 5 Draft process, punched out three and only gave up four hits. Right-handed reliever Chandler Shepherd (L, 0-3) entered for the 12th and allowed the game-winning hit with two outs.

Indianapolis starter Tyler Glasnow overpowered through 6.1 innings in which he struck out 12 and only ceded three hits. The 23-year old right-hander struck out the first seven batters he faced and didn't allow a baserunner until left fielder Brian Bogusevic reached on an infield single on the 10th pitch of his at-bat with one out in the top of the fifth. Glasnow then promptly picked off Bogusevic and continued to cruise until Pawtucket tied the game in the seventh.

Indians righty Brett McKinney (W, 3-1) threw a pair of hitless innings down the stretch.

Indianapolis snatched a 1-0 lead in the second when center fielder Danny Ortiz lined a solo home run to right field.

Pawtucket tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the seventh when designated hitter Bryce Brentz drilled an RBI double off the center-field wall to score center fielder Tzu-Wei Lin, who led off the frame with a walk.

PawSox shortstop Heiker Meneses began the 10th with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from third baseman Deven Marrero and advanced to third on a wild pitch in the dirt. Miller then delivered the RBI bloop single into shallow right field, beyond Indianapolis' drawn-in defense.

With one out in the bottom half of the 10th, Ortiz laced his second long ball of the game to right field to bring the Indians level at 2-2.

In the 12th, Indianapolis first baseman Eric Wood coaxed a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and, three batters later, scored when Newman pulled a ball to the left-field wall.

Following their eight-game road trip and Monday's off day, the PawSox host the Syracuse Chiefs on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at McCoy Stadium. PawSox left-hander Jalen Beeks (4-4, 2.89) is scheduled to start. Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the PawSox Pre-Game Show at 6:35 p.m.

The three-game series runs through Thursday. Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
