Indiana Ice suffer 6-4 defeat

The Indiana Ice had 11 days off since their overtime victory over Team USA on the 17th of February. Friday night, the Indiana defense looked a bit rusty and it cost them a 6-4 defeat to the Tri-City Storm at Pan Am Plaza.

After spotting the Storm a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Ice showed signs of life for about three minutes when the tied up the affair, only to sleep walk through four unanswered goals while the visitors built a 6-2 lead.

Before the letdown, Indy potted a pair of goals 2:31 apart to even the count at 2-all.

Indiana converted on their first power play opportunity when Austin Hervey notched his fifth goal of the season at the 16:47 mark. Mikhail Plotnikov and Mitch Hults assisted on the goal.

Patrick Newell scored his first goal in an Ice sweater at 19:18 of the opening stanza when he collaborated with Adam Johnson and Jason Salvaggio.

Just when it seemed like the hosts reversed the momentum, Tri-City struck again with nine ticks before the first intermission and skated into the second period holding a 3-2 advantage.

The visitors scored three more in the second period to build an insurmountable lead. Indy had trouble defending both the goal line and in front of the net. The Western Conference foe regained the two-goal advantage when Jared Linnell capitalized on a turnover in the corner and walked in on the Indiana net 5:43 into the second period.

Joel L'Esperance made it 5-2 midway through the middle frame when he had free parking in front of the Ice net. Trevor Mingoia got behind the host's defense to give the Storm a 6-2 bulge after 40 minutes of play.

Despite the four-goal deficit, Indiana did not fold. Drew Newmeyer scored 3:54 into the third period slapping home a shot from the faceoff circle. Plotnikov earned his second assist of the game and Newell also provided help on the scoring play.

Pedrie went from assist man to goal scorer with 6:41 remaining in the game. His wrister from the same spot as Newmeyer's goal closed the gap to two scores. Alex Talcott and Canon Pieper earned helpers on the game's final lamplighter.

The venue moves over to Bankers Life Fieldhouse Saturday for the annual "Pack the House" night for charity. Always drawing the United States Hockey League's largest crowd, the Ice hosts Muskegon at 7:05.
