Club de Foot Montreal News Release

MONTREAL - A Dominic Oduro goal in second-half stoppage time clinched a 1-1 tie for the Montreal Impact, Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium against New York City FC.

With the win, the Impact (4-3-1, 13 pts) reclaims first place in the Eastern Conference standings with a one-point advantage on the Philadelphia Union. NYCFC, meanwhile, sits eighth in the Conference.

"I'm glad that we were able to come back and get a point on the road," said head coach Mauro Biello. "We showed character in coming back and being able to score. It helps us rebound from a loss. We've still got things to work on and improve, but we'll take the point."

Oduro scored on a free kick won by Lucas Ontivero, a few metres from the corner flag to goalkeeper Josh Saunders' left. Didier Drogba crossed at the near post for Oduro, whose diving header squeezed past Saunders.

NYCFC had opened the scoring in the 51st minute. R.J. Allen started a counter, playing the ball wide to Khiry Shelton. By the end line, Shelton crossed for Thomas McNamara, who cushioned the ball into Allen's run with one touch. The New York defender beat goalkeeper Evan Bush with an accurate shot to his right.

"You don't stop believing," said Dominic Oduro. "It wasn't a pretty game. But getting a point on the road, and scoring in the dying seconds, it feels more like a win, even though we don't get three points. It gives the team confidence before the game against Colorado."

The Impact played a defensively sound first half, conceding very few good opportunities. At the other hand, Didier Drogba and Ignacio Piatti worried the New York crowd in the 13th minute when Piatti played a long, curling ball behind the New York defence for Drogba. Goalkeeper Saunders, however, came off his line well to push the ball out of Drogba's reach.

The Impact had a penalty shout turned down two minutes from halftime, when Frédéric Brillant tripped Piatti to Saunders' right. Referee Silviu Petrescu instead showed a yellow card to Piatti on the play.

Goalkeeper Evan Bush made his finest save of the game in the 48th minute, when he stopped a McNamara shot on a breakaway. After Allen's opener, Montreal created good chances, notably in the 75th minute when Drogba, by the corner flag, crossed for Shipp, whose header got turned away for a corner kick.

"We have to work, because we can be better than what we showed," said team captain Patrice Bernier. We defended well in the first half. The point on the road is good for us. But we wanted to get back to our actual level for Saturday's game."

Playing three games in eight days, the Impact will play its next game at Stade Saputo this Saturday at 4pm EDT against the Colorado Rapids (RDS, 98,5fm &TSN Radio 690). Excellent individual tickets, as well as season tickets starting at $98 per month and Pick-4-Packs, are still available on impactmontreal.com.

It is recommended that you get to the stadium early and that you use public transit. Major roadwork is scheduled for this Saturday. All southbound lanes on Pie-IX Blvd. will be closed between Mont-Royal Avenue and Sherbrooke Street. Another section of Pie-IX Blvd., from Pierre-de-Coubertin Avenue to Mont-Royal Avenue, will be closed in the northbound direction from April 30, at 6pm, to May 31.
