Idaho Winning Streak Snapped At Six By Aces

November 1, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL) - Idaho Steelheads News Release

(Anchorage, AK) - The Alaska Aces rode the goaltending of Scott Reid and the penalty-kill unit to defeat the Idaho Steelheads, 3-2, in a shootout Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Reid stopped 50 of 52 shots in the win for Alaska and Idaho was 0-for-8 on the power play, including a pair of two-man advantages.

Idaho (6-0-1) actually jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Mark Derlago found the net just 1:25 into the contest and Trevor Ludwig ripped one past Reid off a Tyler Spurgeon faceoff to give the Steelheads at two-goal lead before the mid-point of the first period.

Alaska (5-3-0) would cut into the lead before the end of the first stanza, though. Eric Boguniecki's tally made it 2-1 after one period. Neither team scored in the second period and Tyson Marsh's goal early in the third period tied the game at two, forcing overtime.

Derlago narrowly missed giving Idaho the win in overtime before the teams went to a shootout. Derlago and Spurgeon each scored, giving Idaho a quick 2-0 advantage in the shootout. But Reid would not allow another one to get past him. Former Steelhead Lance Galbraith tied the shootout at two in the fifth and final round, setting up Jake Combs to be the hero when he got the puck past Richard Bachman in the sudden-death, sixth round of the shootout.

Bachman took the loss for Idaho, stopping 22 of 24 shots.

The two teams meet for the third consecutive night on Sunday, the game begins at 7 PM (Mtn) in Anchorage. The game will be joined in progress by the Steelheads' flagship station in Boise, KTIK (1350 AM), due to game four of the World Series. The game will be carried uninterrupted on the B2 Network at www.idahosteelheads.com
