Idaho Falls in Shootout in Front of Sellout Crowd

Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Joe Fallon stopped 23 shots during live action and all five shooters in the game-ending shootout Saturday night as the Las Vegas Wranglers upended the Idaho Steelheads, 2-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,284 fans at Boise's CenturyLink Arena.

Tyler Beskorowany was the tough-luck loser for Idaho (18-7-4), stopping 29 shots during live action and allowing only a Scott Pitt goal in the fourth round of the shootout in net for the Steelheads.

Las Vegas scored first with a short-handed goal as Eric Lampe intercepted an Idaho pass and took it in for a breakaway tally at 7:05 to make it 1-0 Wranglers. Idaho was primed to tie it up two minutes later when Justin Dowling streaked in the left-hand wing, but his backhand was denied on a beautiful glove save by Fallon to keep the Wranglers on top by a goal.

That one-goal lead would hold for Las Vegas deep into the second period. With Andrew Saurer serving a five-minute charging major penalty and Scott Todd serving a two-minute hooking minor, Idaho's Austin Smith took advantage of the open ice to bring the puck up the right-hand wall. Using Channing Boe as a screen, Smith rifled a shot from just inside the blue line over Fallon's shoulder, his team-leading 16th goal of the season, at 18:08 of the second period to tie the game. The goal was assisted by Andrew Carroll, giving Carroll assists in five consecutive games.

Neither team would score in the third period, but Idaho would come close. During a power play, Jeremie Blain's blast from the top of the circles rang off the post, ricocheting across the crease and narrowly missed catching the other post and going into the net. Instead, it shot harmlessly to the left-hand wall.

After a scoreless overtime, each goaltender - Fallon for Las Vegas and Beskorowany for Idaho - denied the first three shooters of the best-of-five shootout. In the fourth round, Idaho's Austin Fyten nearly snuck a puck past Fallon, but the Vegas netminder was able to make the save. Las Vegas came back the other way with Scott Pitt, who beat Beskorowany stick-side for the only tally of the shootout. Fallon stopped Sam Carrick in the final round of the shootout to secure the win.

Neither side could find the net on the power play. Idaho was 0-5 on the man advantage and Las Vegas was 0-3.
