December 2, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks will kick off December in the same way they finished November; on the road. The Icehawks opened a six game road trip last week with a record of 1-1-0-1. They will continue the away stint this weekend with games in Muskegon on Friday and Dayton on Sunday.

The Icehawks wrap up their road trip with a game on Wednesday in Fort Wayne, before returning home for a pair of games on December 11 and 12.

Port Huron plays 12 total games this month, with six games on the road and six at McMorran Arena. Like most other IHL teams this season, the Icehawks have excelled on home ice, but received mixed results on the road. They are currently 7-2-0-0 at home and 4-3-0-1 while away.

The Icehawks are currently in sole possession of second place in the International Hockey League, three points behind the first place Muskegon Lumberjacks with one game in hand. Port Huron has a record of 11-5-0-1 and is 3-1-0-1 in their last five contests and 6-3-0-1 in their last ten.

The Icehawks will attempt to gain ground in the standings this week, but to do so will have to get past the Lumberjacks. Port Huron is 0-3-0-0 versus first place Muskegon this season, with one loss at McMorran and two at L.C. Walker Arena. In contrast, the Icehawks are 3-0-0-0 versus Dayton this season, with two wins in Port Huron and one at Hara Arena.

Injured Reserve: Icehawks center Kris Vernarsky was placed on 30-Day IR on Sunday. He joins right wing Jason Kostadine (14 Day, 11/26/09) and defenseman Rob Cowan (30 Day IR, 11/30/09) on the Injured Reserve list.

Misc. Icehawks Notes: The Icehawks are only team in the IHL that has yet to lose consecutive games this season...The Icehawks erased two-goal deficits in every game they played last week. Though they finished those games 1-1-0-1, they had seven total goals in three games, with all those goals coming in the second period or later...Last season, December was the Icehawks most successful month of the season, as they skated to a record of 9-3-0-0.

On A Tear: Mickael Bedard capped off a great November with four more points last week (3g, 1a). Bedard carries a nine-game point streak into December, which puts him in a tie for the longest streak in the league this season. Bedard leads all IHL rookies with 14 points.

Defenseman Daniel Tetrault led the Icehawks with five points this week on a goal and four assists. He has the league's longest active assist streak at six games and takes a seven-game point streak into December. With his great week, Tetrault now leads IHL defensemen with 15 points (3g, 12a).

On The Kill: The Icehawks continue to excel on the penalty kill, as they have not allowed a power play goal in their last four consecutive games. They have the highest penalty kill percentage in the league at 88.7% and they are the only IHL team to remain in single digits in power play goals allowed, with eight goals against in 71 chances.

Making An Impact: University of Michigan graduate Brandon Naurato signed with the Icehawks on Thursday and scored a goal and an assist in his first IHL game against Bloomington on Friday. Naurato comes to Port Huron after starting the season with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL. Forward Mike Bray was waived to create roster space for the move.

Reaching Milestones: Several Icehawks reached personal milestones last week. Right wing Jason Kostadine played in his 300th career game on Wednesday in Quad City and Nick Lindberg earned his 400th career point on Friday in Bloomington. Rookie defenseman Steven Oleksy also scored his first point as a professional last week, with an assist on Friday against Bloomington.
