IceDogs Lose Game 1 in Peterborough

March 23, 2017 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

For the tenth season in a row, the Niagara IceDogs have played their way into an OHL Eastern Conference playoff spot. This season, fate would have it that the IceDogs drew the Peterborough Petes in the first round, a team they've never met with previously in the postseason. Thursday night marked Game 1 in Peterborough with an opportunity to set an early tone for the rest of the series.

By now, most IceDogs fans are familiar with the budding star that is Kirill Maksimov. It's no secret that if you give this kid enough time and space, he'll make you pay. Just before the midway point of the first period, Maksimov walked into the high slot and let go an absolute laser beam over the glove of Dylan Wells to put the IceDogs up 1-0. Overage workhorse Justin Brack picked up a well-deserved assist on the first IceDogs goal of the 2017 OHL Playoffs. Later in the period, the Petes capitalized on a rebound opportunity to even the score at 1-1.

Less than two minutes into the second period, the Petes tallied another goal to take a 2-1 lead. A few moments later, that lead was extended to 3-1. By the end of the second period, the Petes led by a score of 4-1.

In the latter stages of the third period, St. Catharines native Danial Singer jumped on a rebound and put it past Wells, finishing off a nice play by linemates Kyle Langdon and Pavel Demin. Ultimately, the IceDogs were unable to manufacture a third period comeback, losing 5-2 in a tight-checking hockey game.

The series resumes Saturday night in Peterborough for Game 2 at 7:05. The IceDogs return home on Tuesday for Game 3 at 7:00.
