IceDogs Fall to Steelheads Despite Dominating in Shots
March 16, 2017 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs kicked off the final weekend in their regular season tonight at home, as the Mississauga Steelheads made the trip to the Niagara Region for the final time this regular season. Tonight also marked the first of 2 games between these two teams this weekend, as the IceDogs, and their fans, will travel to Mississauga on Sunday.
Despite starting the first period with a couple really good scoring chances by the 'Dogs, it was the Steelheads who scored early in the 1st period to take a 1-0 lead. The second period saw much of the same physical play. Mississauga capitalized to double their lead to 2, but it was not without a strong effort from the IceDogs. Machala had what was likely the best change of the game for the 'Dogs on a breakaway, but he couldn't will the puck past Ingham. Midway through the 3rd period, Mississauga extended their lead to 3. In the final seconds Johnny Corneil scored his team leading 31st goal of the season to break Mississauga's goose egg. The Steelheads scored on the empty net to retain their 3 goal lead. The score would hold as Mississauga brought home the 4-1 win.
The IceDogs are home Saturday night as they host the Sudbury Wolves for a 7:00pm tilt at the Meridian Centre.
