IceDogs Fall to Generals in Eastern Conference Rivalry Game

October 15, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

Eastern Conference rivals, the Oshawa Generals, made the trip to St. Catharines to take on the IceDogs for the first of two games in their season series. The IceDogs were looking to get the early edge their series, improving from their 1-1 series against the Generals last season.

The first period would see a steady presence of Dhillon in net and some solid defense helped the IceDogs keep the game even. With 6 minutes left in the first, an Oshawa defenseman beat Dhillon stick side to get the early advantage on the scoreboard. Within the last minutes of the period, Oshawa thought they had scored, but the review concluded that Dhillon had stopped the puck before it completely crossed the goal line!

The second period got off to another scrappy start for both teams. Some rough play lead to Oshawa capitalizing on a 5 on 3 opportunity to take a 2 goal lead before the halfway mark. In the second half of the period, Graham Knott had the best chance of the game, going coast to coast, dangling through the defenders and nearly beating the Oshawa goalie, but he couldn't find the back of the net. In the final minutes, Matt Philip scored on the powerplay to get the IceDogs within one. Philip's goal was assisted by Graham Knott and Hayden Davis.

To start the third, the IceDogs came out flying, still feeling the momentum that Philip's goal gave them. Aaron Haydon would make a huge defensive play to stop an Oshawa keeping it a one goal game. Dhillon continued to make timely saves to keep his team in the game, but they weren't able to get another past the Generals goalie.

Your Niagara IceDogs are back in action next Wednesday against the Erie Otters.
