IceDogs Fall Short against Battalion

October 10, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The IceDogs were back in action this afternoon to close out their Thanksgiving road trip, taking on the North Bay Battalion. They were looking to build off the momentum their past two wins gave them to extend their win streak to 3.

The first period got off to a slow start for the IceDogs. Stephen Dhillon came up with some huge saves early to keep the game scoreless. Dhillon's strong play in goal helped stabilize the boys until they were able to push through the Battalion's defense. In the second half of the period, Ondrej Machala was set up by captain Mantha to score his second OHL goal from the point on the powerplay. The IceDogs lead was short lived as North Bay tied the game up at 1 less than two minutes later.

The IceDogs got off to a much better start in the second period. The game was pretty open, with both teams getting good chances but, rookie Matt Philip had a great chance on a powerplay showing his speed and vision on the ice. He wasn't able to find the back of the net but, a few minutes later, Pavel Demin scored his first OHL career goal with a beautiful backhander off the rush. At the tail end of a 5 on 3 advantage for the IceDogs, Ryan Mantha made a huge defensive play to eliminate a serious scoring chance and maintain the lead. North Bay tied the game at 2 in the last 10 minutes of the second.

The third period started with a great shorthanded goal by Graham Knott as he deke'd around the Battalion goalie. The 3-2 go-ahead goal was assisted by Johnny Corneil and Ryan Mantha. At the halfway mark of the final 20, North Bay came back to tie the game at 3. In the final two minutes, North Bay scored to take the lead. The IceDogs staged a valiant attempt at a comeback, but unfortunately fell just short, losing 4-3. They come out of the Thanksgiving long weekend with 4 out 6 possible points.
